How to delete your YouTube account
YouTube is the largest video platform on the web, owned by Google with over 2.7 billion monthly users. YouTube stores every video you uploaded, every video you watched (including how much you watched and what you searched for), comments, likes/dislikes, playlists, channel memberships, and Super Chat / Super Thanks history. Because YouTube is part of your Google Account, deleting a YouTube channel is separate from deleting the underlying Google identity.
Delete your YouTube account, step by step
- 1Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in to the account that owns the YouTube channel
- 2Click 'Data & privacy' in the left nav
- 3Scroll to 'Download or delete your data' > 'Delete a Google service'
- 4Re-authenticate if prompted
- 5Click the trash icon next to YouTube
- 6Read what will be deleted, type 'Delete my content' if prompted
- 7Confirm — your channel and content are removed immediately
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your YouTube channel, all uploaded videos, and Shorts
- ✓Comments, likes, dislikes, and replies you made
- ✓Subscribers, subscriptions, playlists, and Watch Later list
- ✓Channel memberships you received (and the recurring revenue)
- ✓Super Chat / Super Thanks history and YouTube Studio analytics
Stays behind
- ✗Your underlying Google account, Gmail, Drive, Photos (unless you delete those too)
- ✗Comments may persist briefly with re-attribution before final purge
- ✗Other channels' videos that featured or quoted yours remain unchanged
- ✗Cached videos and thumbnails on third-party sites and the Internet Archive
- ✗Records Google retains for legal, billing, and trust & safety reasons
Before you delete
Deleting the YouTube CHANNEL is different from deleting your Google ACCOUNT. The channel option keeps Gmail, Drive, Photos, etc. intact. The full-account option (myaccount.google.com > Data & privacy > Delete your Google Account) wipes everything tied to that login. Always run Google Takeout BEFORE deleting — once gone, your Watch Later, Liked Videos, channel analytics, and Super Chat history are unrecoverable. YouTube Premium and YouTube TV subscriptions don't auto-cancel — handle them in pay.google.com first.
Download your data from YouTube first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Go to takeout.google.com signed in to the same Google Account
- 2Click 'Deselect all', then re-select 'YouTube and YouTube Music'
- 3Click 'All YouTube data included' to choose specific data types (videos, comments, subscriptions, history)
- 4Choose export format (.zip or .tgz) and delivery (email link or upload to Drive/Dropbox)
- 5Click 'Create export' — large archives can take hours to a few days
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1Go to myaccount.google.com/yourdata/youtube
- 2Use the 'Hide your channel' option to make your channel private without deletion
- 3This hides your subscriptions, comments, and channel content but keeps your Google identity active
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
YouTube deletion FAQs
How do I delete just my YouTube channel without losing my Gmail?+
Use 'Delete a Google service' at myaccount.google.com/delete-services-or-account and click the trash next to YouTube. This removes the channel and YouTube history but leaves Gmail, Drive, Photos, Calendar, and the rest of your Google account intact.
Will deleting my YouTube channel delete my comments on other videos?+
Yes. All comments, replies, and community posts tied to your channel are removed. Cached copies on archive sites or screenshotted posts are outside YouTube's control.
Can I recover a deleted YouTube channel?+
There is no public recovery once you confirm. You can sometimes reach out to YouTube Support within a short window if you contact them quickly, but there is no guarantee. Always export with Takeout first.
What happens to channel memberships I sold?+
Memberships are canceled and members stop being billed. They keep any badges and emoji they earned (visible elsewhere on YouTube) but lose access to members-only content immediately.
Does deleting YouTube cancel YouTube Premium or YouTube TV?+
Premium and YouTube TV are billed separately. Cancel through pay.google.com or your App Store / Google Play subscriptions BEFORE deleting, or you'll keep being charged for a service you can't use.
Is there a way to hide my channel instead of deleting it?+
Yes. Use 'Hide your channel' in YouTube Studio > Settings > Channel > Advanced settings. This hides your videos, comments, subscriptions, and likes but keeps the underlying account so you can un-hide later.
