How to delete your WhatsApp account
WhatsApp is the world's largest messaging app, owned by Meta, with around 2 billion users. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted by default for messages and calls, but Meta still collects metadata: your phone number, contacts you have synced (matched against other WhatsApp users), profile photo and 'about' status, groups you're in, when you're online, and IP/device info. Account deletion is fast and well-supported.
Delete your WhatsApp account, step by step
- 1Open WhatsApp on the phone tied to the account
- 2Tap Settings > Account > 'Delete my account'
- 3Enter your phone number with country code
- 4Pick a reason (optional)
- 5Tap 'Delete my account'
- 6Account is deleted from WhatsApp's servers; data takes up to 90 days to fully purge from backups
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your phone number and WhatsApp account
- ✓Profile photo, 'about' status, and display name
- ✓Account info, settings, and notification preferences
- ✓Membership in every group you were in
- ✓Message backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud (you have to delete those separately)
Stays behind
- ✗End-to-end encrypted messages on every recipient's device (Meta has no copy)
- ✗Backups on the OTHER party's Google Drive or iCloud
- ✗Records Meta retains for trust & safety, anti-fraud, and legal compliance
- ✗Phone-number / contact metadata that other people stored about you
- ✗Channels and broadcast lists where you were a subscriber (your name leaves)
Before you delete
Deleting WhatsApp does NOT delete your Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or Threads accounts even though all are owned by Meta. Cancel WhatsApp Business subscriptions if applicable. Be aware: end-to-end encrypted messages on OTHER people's devices remain (Meta has no copy to retract). Your phone number is freed after deletion and you can re-register, but past conversations don't come back. Group chats you owned hand off ownership to remaining admins.
Download your data from WhatsApp first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Open Settings > Account > 'Request account info'
- 2Tap 'Request report'
- 3WhatsApp prepares a report (account info, contacts, groups, messages metadata — but NOT message bodies, which are E2E encrypted)
- 4Available to download in 3 days from the same screen
- 5Save the ZIP before deleting your account
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1WhatsApp doesn't have a separate 'deactivate' button
- 2To go silent without deletion: Settings > Notifications > disable, then leave each group, and stop opening the app — your account remains but you're effectively offline
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
WhatsApp deletion FAQs
Will deleting WhatsApp delete my Facebook or Instagram account?+
No. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads are all owned by Meta but each has a separate account and a separate deletion flow. Delete each through its own app.
Can I recover my WhatsApp messages after I delete?+
No. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, so Meta has no server-side copy to restore. Backups on Google Drive or iCloud expire if you don't re-register the same number within a year. Your messages on OTHER people's phones are still there but you can't recover them onto a new account.
What happens to groups I created when I delete WhatsApp?+
You leave the group automatically. If you're the only admin, WhatsApp assigns admin rights to a random member. Group history stays — your messages persist on every member's device because they're E2E encrypted copies, not server-stored.
Will my phone number be available for someone else after I delete?+
Phone numbers are freed after deletion. If someone gets your old number from their carrier later, they can sign up for WhatsApp with it — but they won't see your old messages because those stay on the previous recipients' devices.
How do I delete my WhatsApp backup on iCloud or Google Drive?+
Open iCloud (or Google Drive) and find the WhatsApp backup file in app data. Delete it manually — WhatsApp's deletion flow doesn't reach into cloud storage you control. Without this step the backup sits in your iCloud quota until expiration.
Can I delete WhatsApp without my phone if I lost it?+
Get a new SIM with the same number, install WhatsApp, complete the SMS verification, then delete the account. If you can't get the same number back, contact support@whatsapp.com from the email used for any WhatsApp Business setup, or file a privacy request with Meta.
