How to delete your Telegram account
Telegram is a cloud-based messaging service registered in Dubai, used by over 900 million monthly users for group chats, channels, voice/video calls, and large file sharing. Unlike Signal, most Telegram chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted by default (only 'Secret Chats' are) — your regular chat history is stored on Telegram's servers. Telegram retains your phone number, contacts (if synced), session info, and all chat history until you delete or your account auto-expires.
Delete your Telegram account, step by step
- 1Open my.telegram.org in any browser
- 2Enter your full phone number (with country code) and click 'Next'
- 3Open Telegram on your phone or desktop and copy the confirmation code from the official @Telegram channel
- 4Paste the code into the browser and click 'Sign in'
- 5Click 'Delete Account' (or 'Deactivate account')
- 6Provide an optional reason
- 7Click 'Yes, delete my account' — deletion is IMMEDIATE
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your phone number, username, display name, bio, and avatar
- ✓All cloud chat history (1:1, group, and channel messages you sent)
- ✓Channels and supergroups you OWN (not just admin)
- ✓Saved Messages, contacts synced to Telegram, and stickers
- ✓Active sessions on every device you signed in from
Stays behind
- ✗Messages you sent in groups/channels persist for other members (Telegram removes them in some cases but not always)
- ✗Secret Chats remain on the other person's device until they delete (Telegram has no copy)
- ✗Channels and supergroups you only ADMINED (didn't own) continue to exist with remaining admins
- ✗Records Telegram retains for spam, abuse, and legal compliance
- ✗Messages forwarded by others quoting you remain attributed to a deleted account
Before you delete
Telegram deletion is INSTANT and irreversible — no grace period. ALL your messages in cloud chats, all your media, all your channels you own and groups you own will be permanently deleted. Channels and supergroups you only admin (not own) are NOT affected. Telegram already has an auto-delete setting (Settings > Privacy and Security > Auto-Delete Account, default 6 months of inactivity) that you can use as a lower-effort alternative.
Download your data from Telegram first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Use the Telegram DESKTOP app (data export is NOT available on mobile)
- 2Open Settings > Advanced > 'Export Telegram data'
- 3Pick what to include (account info, contacts, messages, stickers, media, channel posts)
- 4Choose the output format (HTML or JSON) and a destination folder
- 5Click 'Export' — large exports take hours and run inside the desktop app
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1In Telegram, open Settings > 'Privacy and Security' > 'Delete account if away for'
- 2Choose 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year of inactivity
- 3If you stop using Telegram for that long, the account auto-deletes — a lower-effort path than immediate deletion
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Telegram deletion FAQs
Is Telegram account deletion instant?+
Yes. Once you confirm at my.telegram.org, your account and all cloud-stored messages are deleted immediately and permanently. There is no recovery window.
Will deleting Telegram remove my messages from group chats?+
Mostly — Telegram removes your messages from most groups when you delete, but some messages may persist as cached copies on members' devices. Forwarded copies of your messages (someone else hit forward) remain in the new chat.
What about my Secret Chats?+
Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted and exist only on the two devices that created them. Telegram has no server-side copy. Deleting your account doesn't pull Secret Chat messages off the other person's phone — you have to clear those manually before deletion.
What happens to channels and groups I created?+
Channels and supergroups where you are the OWNER are deleted with your account. Groups and channels where you are only an admin continue to exist with the remaining admins. Transfer ownership FIRST if you want a channel you built to survive.
Can I auto-delete my Telegram account instead of doing it manually?+
Yes. Settings > Privacy and Security > 'Delete account if away for' lets you pick 1 month to 1 year of inactivity. If you stop using Telegram for that long it deletes itself — useful if you're not sure or want a passive exit.
Will Telegram release my phone number after deletion?+
Yes. Phone numbers and usernames are released and can be reused for new Telegram accounts. If you re-register the same phone number later you can build a new account but you won't recover the old one.
