How to delete your Discord account
Discord is a voice, video, and text chat platform with over 200 million monthly users, originally built for gamers and now used by communities of every kind. Discord stores your username, email, phone (if added), every message you've sent in DMs and servers, voice metadata, IP addresses, and connected-account data from services like Spotify, Steam, and Twitch.
Delete your Discord account, step by step
- 1Open Discord on desktop or web (deletion is not exposed on mobile in some regions)
- 2Click the gear icon in the bottom-left to open User Settings
- 3Click 'My Account' under the 'Account Settings' header
- 4Scroll to the bottom and click 'Delete Account'
- 5Enter your password
- 6If you have 2FA enabled, also enter your 6-digit code
- 7Click 'Delete Account' to confirm
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your username, display name, avatar, banner, and bio
- ✓Email address, phone number, and connected accounts
- ✓DM history visible from your side (recipients keep their copy)
- ✓Server memberships and roles
- ✓Nitro subscription benefits (cancel billing separately)
Stays behind
- ✗Every message you sent in servers (re-attributed to 'Deleted User #0000')
- ✗DMs the other person received remain in their inbox
- ✗Servers you owned that you transferred to someone else
- ✗Discord's records for trust & safety, billing, and legal compliance
- ✗Audit-log entries on servers showing actions you took as a moderator
Before you delete
If you own any servers you must transfer ownership or delete them first — Discord will block deletion otherwise. Your account is queued for deletion and disabled for 14–30 days, during which logging in cancels the request. Once deleted, your username appears as 'Deleted User #0000' on every message you ever sent.
Download your data from Discord first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Open User Settings > Privacy & Safety
- 2Scroll to 'Request all of my Data' and click 'Request Data'
- 3Confirm via the email Discord sends
- 4Your archive arrives by email in up to 30 days as a ZIP containing messages, servers, account info, and analytics events
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1Open User Settings > My Account
- 2Click 'Disable Account' (the option above 'Delete Account')
- 3Enter your password and (if applicable) your 2FA code
- 4Your account is hidden but recoverable any time by logging back in
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
Discord deletion FAQs
Will deleting my Discord account delete my messages?+
No. Messages you sent in servers and group DMs remain visible, but your username is replaced with 'Deleted User #0000'. The only way to remove the content itself is to delete each message manually before deleting the account, or use a tool like Undiscord.
How long does Discord take to delete an account?+
Your account is queued for deletion and disabled immediately. Permanent deletion happens 14–30 days later. Logging in during that window cancels the request, so don't sign back in if you want it gone.
Why does Discord say I can't delete my account?+
Almost always because you still own one or more servers. Transfer ownership (User Settings > Server > Members > '...' > Transfer Ownership) or delete the server, then retry.
What's the difference between disabling and deleting?+
Disabling hides your profile and stops notifications but keeps all data and lets you reactivate any time. Deleting permanently removes your account and is irreversible after the 14–30 day window.
Can someone else take my Discord username after deletion?+
Yes. After the 14–30 day grace period your username and (if applicable) friend tag are freed and another user can claim them.
Does deleting Discord cancel my Nitro?+
If you subscribed through Discord directly, it cancels at the end of the billing period. If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app, cancel through Apple or Google first or you'll keep getting charged.
