How to delete your Signal account
Signal is an end-to-end encrypted messenger run by the non-profit Signal Foundation, widely considered the gold standard for private messaging. Signal collects strikingly little: your phone number (now optionally usernames), the date your account was created, and the last time your account connected to the service. Messages, contacts, profile, groups, and call history live only on your device and other recipients' devices.
Delete your Signal account, step by step
- 1Open Signal on the phone tied to the account
- 2Tap your profile icon > 'Account'
- 3Tap 'Delete account'
- 4Enter your full phone number with country code
- 5Tap 'Delete account' to confirm
- 6Account is removed from Signal's servers immediately; local app data is also wiped
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your phone number registration with Signal
- ✓Profile, avatar, and 'about' info
- ✓PIN and Signal username (if set)
- ✓Linked desktop and iPad sessions
- ✓Stickers you uploaded to your Signal account
Stays behind
- ✗Messages you sent stay on the OTHER person's device (Signal has no server copy)
- ✗Messages on YOUR device wipe when the app deletion completes
- ✗Records Signal retains: just account-created date and last-connect date, per Signal's published policy
- ✗Group memberships on the group itself remove your tag; messages stay encrypted on members' devices
- ✗Backups you created locally (on Android) need to be deleted manually from your file storage
Before you delete
Signal stores so little server-side that deletion mostly affects your local device and notifies contacts to remove you from their address books. Other recipients' devices keep messages you sent (the same as WhatsApp/iMessage). On desktop, Signal Desktop instances are tied to your phone — deleting the mobile account also signs out Signal Desktop. There are no subscriptions to cancel.
Download your data from Signal first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Signal has very little data to export. On Android: Settings > Chats > 'Chat backups' creates a local encrypted backup. On iOS, message history is not exportable due to Apple's restrictions. Signal does not have a server-side data-access form because the server holds almost nothing.
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
Signal deletion FAQs
Does Signal really have no data to delete?+
Signal famously collects almost nothing — the published 'subpoena response' shows they can only confirm an account exists, when it was created, and when it last connected. Most personal data (messages, contacts, groups) is on YOUR device, not Signal's servers. Deleting your account wipes the device data and unregisters your phone number from Signal.
Will my messages disappear from the other person's Signal after I delete?+
No. Messages are end-to-end encrypted copies on each device. Signal has no server copy to retract. The other person's Signal will show 'this number is no longer on Signal' but the message history with you stays intact for them.
Can I delete Signal without access to my phone?+
Get a new SIM with the same number and verify, or contact support@signal.org. Without the number you can't satisfy Signal's verification because that's the only identity field they have.
What happens to groups I'm in?+
You're removed from the member list. The group itself remains and other members continue chatting. Messages you sent before deletion stay on members' devices.
Will deleting Signal also wipe Signal Desktop?+
Yes — desktop and iPad are linked devices tied to your phone's primary install. Deleting the account on the phone unlinks every desktop and tablet session and signs them out.
Can someone else sign up for Signal with my old number?+
Yes, once the number is reassigned by your carrier. They'll get a fresh Signal account; they won't see any of your old conversations because messages live on devices, not the server.
