How to delete your Venmo account
Venmo is PayPal's US peer-to-peer payments app, used to send money, split bills and pay merchants — with a social feed that has historically made those payments visible to friends or the public by default. Its privacy statement confirms Venmo holds your legal name, phone number, email, home address, date of birth and Social Security number, plus linked bank account and routing numbers, linked cards, your transaction history with payment notes, device identifiers, IP address and GPS/Wi-Fi geolocation, call recordings from customer service, and face scans used to authenticate your account and manage fraud. Business and charity profiles add taxpayer IDs and business details. Because Venmo is a regulated money transmitter, closing your account removes your access — it does not erase the underlying financial records.
Delete your Venmo account, step by step
- 1Move your Venmo balance out first. Venmo's warning is explicit: "Be sure to move any money remaining in your Venmo account before closing it, as you'll no longer have access to those funds once the account is closed." Transfer it to a linked bank account or debit card, send it to another Venmo user, or return the payment to the sender
- 2Complete any pending transactions, and resolve any open dispute, claim, hold, limitation or reserve — the User Agreement lists each of these as a condition that prevents closure, along with amounts owed to Venmo
- 3If you have a Venmo Credit Card, close it and pay it off first. The User Agreement blocks closure "if you have a Venmo Credit Card, until such time that account is both closed and paid in full". The card is issued by Synchrony Bank — call the number on the back of the card (available 24/7). Venmo publishes 855-878-6462 specifically for a lost or stolen Venmo Credit Card
- 4If you manage a linked Teen Account, move any money out of it as well. Venmo does not document what happens to a Teen Account when the parent account closes, so contact Support first if that applies to you
- 5Download your records before you lose access: in the app tap the Settings gear, select "Statements", choose the year and month from the dropdown, then download to your device or have the file emailed. On the web, sign in at venmo.com, click "Statements" in the sidebar, pick the month and year, and click "Download CSV"
- 6In the app, tap the "Me" tab, tap the Settings gear, select "Account" under Preferences, then tap "Close Venmo Account" and confirm
- 7On a desktop browser instead: sign in at venmo.com and go to https://venmo.com/account/settings/cancel (the article's "go to your account settings" link), then click "Close my Venmo account" at the bottom of the page and confirm
- 8Watch for the final transaction history email — Venmo sends "one final transaction history message to the email address on file", and after closure you can no longer sign in to retrieve anything else
- 9To close only a business profile and keep your personal account, you must contact Support: "Me" > "Settings" > "Get Help" > "Chat With Us", or use the Contact Us page at https://help.venmo.com/cs/contact-us
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Access to the account — you can no longer sign in, send, request or receive money
- ✓Your public-facing profile: display name, @username, profile photo and your presence in the Venmo social feed and search
- ✓Any linked business profile — closing your personal profile automatically closes it. Venmo states business profiles "are permanently deleted when closed — they can't be reactivated", and that a new profile for the same business entity can't be created
- ✓Your ability to use any Venmo Debit Card tied to the account, since the account it draws on no longer exists (Venmo's close-account article does not spell out the card mechanics — confirm with Support if you rely on the card)
- ✓Access to your stored wallet — linked bank accounts and cards are no longer reachable through Venmo. Note this does not close a Venmo Credit Card, which must be closed separately with Synchrony beforehand
- ✓Your access to any linked Teen Account arrangement, which depends on the parent account remaining open
Stays behind
- ✗Your transaction records. Venmo's privacy statement states Personal Information used for the ongoing relationship is stored "for the duration of the relationship plus a period of 10 years", and longer where legal, litigation or audit obligations apply
- ✗Every payment you sent or received still appears in the other person's transaction history and monthly statements, with your name and the payment note attached
- ✗Your liability. The User Agreement is explicit: "you will remain liable for all obligations related to your Venmo account even after the Venmo account is closed" — negative balances, chargebacks and reversals still follow you
- ✗Your Venmo Credit Card account, which is issued by Synchrony Bank rather than Venmo — closing it is a separate action and its history stays on your credit report for years
- ✗Data already shared with PayPal affiliates, identity-verification vendors, card networks and other financial partners, which closing the account does not recall
- ✗Anything from Venmo's public feed that third parties already screenshotted, scraped or archived — Venmo's public transaction API was open enough in earlier years that researchers pulled bulk exports of it, and closing your account does not reach those copies
Before you delete
All URLs in this entry were fetched and load; none were fabricated. Venmo is a regulated money transmitter, so closure is an access removal, not a data erasure — the privacy statement commits to keeping relationship data for the duration of the relationship plus 10 years, extended where legal or litigation obligations apply. The blockers that actually stop closure are the five named in the User Agreement: evading an investigation, a pending transaction or open dispute/claim, amounts owed, a hold/limitation/reserve, and an open or unpaid Venmo Credit Card (a Synchrony Bank product you must close separately). Contrary to a common claim, a non-zero balance is NOT a documented blocker — but you lose access to those funds at closure, so move them out first. Closing a personal profile also closes any linked business profile, and business profiles are permanently deleted with no path to recreate one for the same entity. Venmo's close-account article says nothing about the Venmo Debit Card or Teen Accounts, so treat any claim about those being auto-cancelled as unverified and check with Support. Download statements first: after closure you cannot sign in, and the only record you get is a single final transaction-history email. Closure does not scrub you from other users' feeds and statements. There is no deactivate or pause option; the closest partial step is setting payments to Private and disabling Find Me under Settings > Privacy. The CCPA page publishes request statistics but provides no submission form, hence no gdpr_request_url.
Download your data from Venmo first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1In the Venmo app, tap the Settings gear
- 2Select "Statements"
- 3Use the dropdown to choose the year and month you want
- 4Choose to download the file to your device or have it sent to your email address
- 5On the web instead: sign in at venmo.com, click "Statements" in the sidebar, use the dropdown to pick the month (click the year to change years), and click "Download CSV"
- 6Repeat month by month — statements are issued one period at a time as CSV, and oversized files are emailed rather than downloaded
- 7Parents or guardians managing a linked Teen Account can pull its statements via the "View statements" option when viewing that account
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Venmo deletion FAQs
Why won't Venmo let me close my account?+
The User Agreement lists five specific conditions that block closure: you cannot close an account to evade an investigation, while there is a pending transaction or an open dispute or claim, if amounts are owed to Venmo, if the account is subject to a hold, limitation or reserve, or if you have a Venmo Credit Card that is not both closed and paid in full. Clear each of these first. If a hold or limitation is the blocker, you have to work through Support at Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us. Note that a leftover balance is not listed as a blocker — but you should still move it out, because you lose access to those funds the moment the account closes.
What happens to the money left in my Venmo balance?+
You lose access to it. Venmo's own warning is that once the account is closed "you'll no longer have access to those funds", and there is no documented self-service way to reach them afterward. Move the balance out before you close — transfer to a linked bank account or debit card, send it to another Venmo user, or refund it to the original sender. If an account has already been closed with money in it, your only remaining channel is Venmo Support; Venmo does not publish a recovery process.
Can I reopen my Venmo account or get my username back?+
Venmo's help article documents no reactivation path for a closed personal account, and for business profiles it is explicit that they "are permanently deleted when closed — they can't be reactivated" and that a new profile representing the same business entity can't be created. Treat closure as irreversible: if you want to use Venmo again, plan on signing up fresh. Venmo does not publish whether a closed account's @username is released back into the pool, so do not count on reclaiming your handle.
How long does Venmo keep my data after I close my account?+
Roughly a decade. The Venmo Privacy Statement says Personal Information used for the ongoing relationship is stored "for the duration of the relationship plus a period of 10 years, unless we need to keep it longer" for legal compliance or litigation. As a licensed money transmitter Venmo is legally required to retain transaction records, so a deletion request cannot remove your payment history.
How do I download my Venmo transaction history before deleting?+
Do this before you close, because you cannot sign in afterward. In the app: Settings gear > "Statements", pick the year and month from the dropdown, then download to your device or have it sent to your email. On venmo.com: sign in, click "Statements" in the sidebar, choose the month and year, and click "Download CSV". Statements come one month at a time as CSV, and oversized files are emailed rather than downloaded directly. Parents can pull a linked Teen Account's records via "View statements" on that account. Venmo also sends one final transaction history message to your email on file after closure.
Can I just make my Venmo private instead of deleting it?+
Yes, and it is worth doing even if you plan to close. Venmo has no deactivate or pause option, so this is the closest partial step. Go to Me > Settings gear > Privacy and set your default payment privacy to "Private" ("We will not share the transaction anywhere other than in your personal transactions feed") rather than "Public" or "Friends only", then use "Find Me" to turn off discoverability On Venmo and On PayPal. You can also raise the privacy level on payments you already sent, but only in one direction — Venmo states "you can only make past payments more private than they were initially", so the change cannot be undone.
How do I close a business profile without deleting my personal Venmo?+
Not from the app's close-account flow — closing your personal profile closes the linked business profile with it, but not the reverse. To close only the business profile, contact Venmo Support at Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us, use https://help.venmo.com/cs/contact-us, or call (855) 812-4430 (8 AM - 8 PM CT daily). Be certain before you ask: Venmo states business profiles "are permanently deleted when closed — they can't be reactivated", and a new profile representing the same business entity can't be created.
