How to delete your Cash App account
Cash App is Block, Inc.'s peer-to-peer payments and consumer banking app. Because it operates as a regulated financial institution, your account holds far more than a payment history: your legal name, phone number and email, your public $cashtag and profile photo, every payment you have ever sent or received (with notes and the counterparty's identity), linked bank accounts and debit/credit cards, Cash App Card and direct-deposit account and routing numbers, identity-verification data (SSN, date of birth, and in many cases photo ID), device and geolocation data, and — if you used them — Cash App Investing brokerage holdings, bitcoin balances, Afterpay/Borrow activity, and Cash App Taxes returns. Closing the account is self-service inside the app, but Cash App states plainly that it is "legally required to maintain some transaction records and account information" after you leave.
Delete your Cash App account, step by step
- 1Zero out your balance first — Cash App cannot close an account holding funds. On the Cash App home screen, select the 'Money' tab, tap 'Cash Out', choose the full amount and a deposit speed, and confirm with your PIN or biometrics. Funds are typically available within 1-3 business days, or instantly depending on the speed you pick
- 2Sell or withdraw any investments — sell your stocks in the Investing tab and sell or transfer out any bitcoin, so both balances read zero. If you have a linked personal or business account, cash that out too, because it will be closed alongside this one
- 3Download your data before you close, because you cannot retrieve it afterward: log in at cash.app/account in a web browser (you will be sent to a login screen first), click 'Account' at the bottom of the left toolbar, then under 'Security and privacy' scroll down and click 'Download your info' to get a .csv of your personal information. Also view and download your transaction history, and save any Cash App Taxes returns
- 4Cancel anything that pays into or bills the account — reroute direct deposit with your employer or benefits provider, and cancel recurring payments or subscriptions charged to your Cash App Card
- 5In the app, tap the profile icon in the top-right corner of the Cash App home screen
- 6Scroll down and tap 'Support'
- 7Tap 'Account & Settings' (Cash App's own articles differ here — one version goes straight to the closure option, so if you do not see this screen, just navigate to 'Close Your Cash App Account')
- 8Tap 'Close Your Cash App Account' and confirm. Your $cashtag is deactivated, incoming payments stop, and you are signed out of all sessions. Any linked personal or Cash for Business account is closed at the same time. Cash App describes this route as permanently deleting your account and personal information
- 9Optional but recommended if you want your privacy-rights deletion handled explicitly: go to profile icon → 'Support' → 'Account & Settings', open the 'Access and Delete Your Personal Information' article, and choose 'Chat' to start the request. Cash App grants deletion "except within certain exceptions the law provides"
- 10If you no longer have the app installed, call Cash App Support at 1-800-969-1940 to close the account and request deletion, or start a chat from cash.app/support
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your $cashtag is deactivated — it stops accepting payments and is permanently retired; Cash App states a closed account's $cashtag "cannot be reused" by anyone, including you
- ✓Access to your Cash App profile, activity feed, receipts, and in-app contact list
- ✓Your Cash App Card stops working, so anything billed to it will fail
- ✓Any linked personal or Cash for Business account under the same login is closed at the same time
- ✓Your login sessions are all terminated and you can no longer sign in to that account
- ✓Personal information covered by the deletion request, to the extent the law allows Cash App to delete it
Stays behind
- ✗Transaction and account records Cash App is legally required to keep — the help article states outright that "as a financial institution Cash App is legally required to maintain some transaction records and account information"
- ✗Data retained under the privacy notice "as long as we need it to do things like fight fraud, collect fees you owe, resolve disputes with (or involving) you, follow the law, enforce our agreements and defend our rights in court" — the notice adds that "even after you close your account, we can retain information about you and any transactions or Services in which you may have participated"
- ✗Identity-verification and anti-money-laundering records tied to your SSN and ID, and Cash App Investing brokerage records (Cash App Investing LLC is a FINRA/SIPC member subject to securities recordkeeping rules)
- ✗Your side of every payment as it appears in the other person's activity feed and receipts — their copy is not erased when your account closes
- ✗Tax forms already issued and filed with the IRS; Cash App Taxes returns become inaccessible, and Cash App says the fastest way to get past tax documents from a closed account is to request them from the IRS directly
- ✗Bitcoin transactions you made, which stay permanently recorded on the public blockchain regardless of what happens to your account
Before you delete
Use the in-app 'Close Your Cash App Account' button — Cash App's help article titled "Delete Your Cash App Account" presents that button as the way to "permanently delete your account and personal information." A second documented route (Support → Account & Settings → 'Access and Delete Your Personal Information' → Chat) uses the same wording and is the one tied explicitly to your privacy rights, so running it as well costs nothing and creates a clearer record of your request. Either way deletion is granted only "except within certain exceptions the law provides." Because Cash App is a financial institution subject to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, its privacy notice states that state consumer-privacy laws "do not apply to information that is governed by the GLBA" for people who use its financial products — so expect a partial deletion at best. Practical blockers: you must Cash Out every dollar and zero your stock and bitcoin balances first; the terms of service let Cash App hold your funds if an investigation is pending at the time of closure, and say it "may require you to link a new bank account that has not been associated with your Account" before releasing them. Pending transactions are settled at closure, pending direct deposits are returned to the originator within 3-5 business days, and unclaimed peer-to-peer payments are automatically cancelled 15 days after processing begins. Closure is permanent — you cannot reopen a closed account, and a new signup gets a new $cashtag. Do not simply abandon the account: Cash App closes accounts unused for more than two years that hold no money (after trying to notify you), and the terms warn that funds left in a long-dormant account may be deemed "unclaimed" or "abandoned" and escheated to your state.
Download your data from Cash App first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Log into your Cash App account in a web browser at cash.app/account (signed-out visits redirect to the login screen first)
- 2At the bottom of the left toolbar, click 'Account' to open your settings
- 3Under 'Security and privacy', scroll down and click 'Download your info'
- 4You'll download a .csv file containing your Cash App personal information
- 5Separately, view and download your transaction history from the website or the app, and save any Cash App Taxes returns — Cash App notes you can download a copy of your personal information any time before the account is closed, and past tax documents must afterwards be requested from the IRS directly
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1Cash App has no temporary deactivation or "freeze" state — the terms of service use deactivation as the way you terminate your account ("You may also terminate the Cash App Terms applicable to your Account by deactivating your Account at any time"), and closure is permanent. If you only want to stop using it for a while, sign out (profile icon → 'Sign Out') and disable your Cash App Card in the app. Be aware that leaving the account dormant is not neutral: Cash App closes accounts that go unused for more than two years with no money in them, that closure permanently retires your $cashtag, and the terms warn that funds left in a long-inactive account may be deemed "unclaimed" or "abandoned" under state law and escheated to the state.
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
Cash App deletion FAQs
Why won't Cash App let me close my account?+
The most common reason is a non-zero balance. Cash App states you must Cash Out all funds before the account can be closed, and that includes selling any stocks and selling or transferring out any bitcoin. If you have a linked personal or business account, you have to empty that one too, because it closes at the same time. If cashing out fails, Cash App says you may need to link a different debit card or bank account — and the terms of service go further, allowing it to require a bank account that has not previously been associated with your account. Funds typically arrive within 1-3 business days. Pending transactions are settled at closure, and if there is an open investigation on your account, Cash App can hold your funds until it is resolved.
Can I reopen my Cash App account or get my $cashtag back?+
No. Cash App is explicit that when an account is closed — whether at your request or due to inactivity — the $cashtag is deactivated and cannot be reused, and you cannot open a closed account. You can sign up again, but you get a new $cashtag and you will not regain access to information stored in the old account. That is why downloading your data before you close is not optional advice: Cash App notes you can download a copy of your personal information any time *before* the account is closed.
Does closing my Cash App account delete my personal information?+
Cash App's own article titled "Delete Your Cash App Account" says that tapping 'Close Your Cash App Account' is how you "permanently delete your account and personal information." A separate article describes a Support-chat route (profile icon → 'Support' → 'Account & Settings' → open 'Access and Delete Your Personal Information' → 'Chat') using identical wording; it is the route tied explicitly to your privacy rights, so it is worth doing as well. Either way, deletion applies "except within certain exceptions the law provides" — as a financial institution Cash App keeps transaction records and identity-verification data, and its privacy notice says it can retain information about you and your transactions even after you close your account.
How do I close my Cash App account if I deleted the app or lost my phone?+
Call Cash App Support at 1-800-969-1940 — the same number Cash App's privacy notice lists for access and deletion requests. Alternatively, go to cash.app/support and select 'Start a Chat'; note that Cash App's own instructions for the chat route tell you to scan a QR code, download the app, tap your profile, scroll to 'Support' and tap 'Chat', so the phone line is usually faster if you cannot reinstall. Cash App verifies your identity before acting on the request.
Cash App closed my account without asking me — what now?+
There are two documented reasons. If it was closed for activity that violates the terms of service, Cash App tells you to contact Support to initiate an appeal; the review can take up to 10 days, and in the meantime you can still withdraw your funds and sell stocks or bitcoin even though most other features are blocked. If it was closed for inactivity, that applies to accounts unused for more than two years that hold no money, and Cash App says it does its best to notify you first — logging in before the stated closure date keeps it open. Once closed, it cannot be reopened.
What happens to my direct deposits, Cash App Card and tax documents after I close?+
Your Cash App Card stops working, so cancel any subscriptions billed to it first. Pending direct deposits are returned to the originator within 3-5 business days, and you have to contact your employer or benefits provider directly with new account details. Tax forms Cash App already issued were also filed with the IRS and are unaffected by closure; if you used Cash App Taxes, download and save your returns before closing, because Cash App says the fastest way to get past tax documents from a closed account is to request them from the IRS directly.
