PayPal is a global payments service with more than 400 million accounts, used for online purchases, peer-to-peer transfers (Venmo is a separate PayPal-owned product), and merchant payments. PayPal stores your full transaction history, linked bank accounts and cards, billing/shipping addresses, identity-verification documents (ID, SSN/EIN for sellers), buyer/seller protection records, and chat history with their support team.

Delete your PayPal account, step by step

  1. 1Sign in to paypal.com on a desktop browser
  2. 2Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right
  3. 3Under 'Account options', click 'Close your account'
  4. 4PayPal first checks for issues: balance, pending payments, open disputes, recurring billing agreements — resolve all of these
  5. 5Click 'Close Account'
  6. 6Confirm — the account is closed immediately for new transactions but financial records are retained per banking law

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Login access to the PayPal account
  • Saved shipping and billing addresses
  • Display of linked bank accounts and cards (removed from your view)
  • Recurring billing agreements with merchants (cancelled)
  • Email subscriptions and marketing preferences

Stays behind

  • Full transaction history, retained for 5–7 years for AML/tax compliance
  • Identity-verification documents and KYC records
  • Records of buyer/seller protection claims and dispute outcomes
  • Customer-service interaction logs
  • Information shared with merchants you transacted with (PayPal cannot retract from them)

Before you delete

PayPal cannot close an account with a non-zero balance, pending payments, an open dispute, an active subscription billing agreement, or unresolved limitations. Settle all of those first. PayPal is also required to RETAIN transaction records for 5–7 years under anti-money-laundering and tax law, so account closure doesn't equal full data deletion — only suspends the active account. EU users have stronger erasure rights but PayPal will still retain mandatory records.

Download your data from PayPal first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Open Settings > 'Data & Privacy'
  2. 2Click 'Manage your personal info' > 'Request data'
  3. 3Pick the categories (transactions, account info, communications)
  4. 4Verify via email or 2FA
  5. 5PayPal delivers the archive within 20 days as downloadable files

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California

You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

PayPal deletion FAQs

Why is PayPal refusing to close my account?+

Common reasons: a non-zero balance (transfer it to your bank first), an unresolved dispute or chargeback, an active billing agreement with a merchant, a pending payment, or an account limitation. Resolve each issue from your dashboard and try again.

Will PayPal delete my transaction history if I close my account?+

No. PayPal is legally required to retain transaction records for 5–7 years (depending on jurisdiction) to comply with anti-money-laundering and tax laws. Closure removes your login access, but financial history is preserved on PayPal's servers.

How do I cancel recurring payments before closing PayPal?+

Go to Settings > Payments > 'Manage automatic payments' to see every merchant with a billing agreement. Cancel each one BEFORE closing the account, or those merchants may continue trying to charge you and trigger account issues.

Does closing PayPal close my Venmo account?+

No. Venmo is owned by PayPal but is a separate product with a separate account and separate login. Close Venmo through venmo.com if you also want it deleted.

What if my PayPal account is limited or frozen?+

Resolve the limitation first by completing whatever PayPal asks (identity verification, providing documents). You cannot close a limited account directly. If the limitation is unresolved and you've waited the 180-day required period, contact PayPal support to discuss closure options.

Can I close PayPal if I had a business account with tax forms?+

Yes, but PayPal will retain the 1099-K and tax records for the regulatory retention period (typically 7 years in the US). Make sure you've downloaded your year-end tax forms BEFORE closing because you may not be able to retrieve them later.
