How to delete your Coinbase account

FinanceOwned by Coinbase Global, Inc.Self-service onlineDifficulty: ModerateTime: instantVerified June 2026

Coinbase is one of the largest US-regulated crypto exchanges, with around 100 million verified users. Coinbase stores your full identity verification (ID, selfie, SSN/EIN, address), transaction history of every crypto purchase/sale/transfer, linked bank accounts and cards, tax forms, Coinbase Wallet (separate product), and the historical price of every asset at every transaction time. As a regulated financial institution, Coinbase is required to retain most personal and transaction data for 5–7 years even after account closure.

Delete your Coinbase account, step by step

  1. 1Sign in to coinbase.com on a desktop browser
  2. 2Go to coinbase.com/settings/close_account directly
  3. 3Or navigate: Settings (avatar > Profile & Settings) > 'Profile information' > scroll to 'Close account'
  4. 4Make sure all balances are zero (sell or withdraw to external wallet/bank first)
  5. 5Click 'Close account'
  6. 6Confirm via the email Coinbase sends and any 2FA prompt
  7. 7Account is closed immediately for new activity but transaction records are retained for regulatory periods

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your Coinbase login and account access
  • Saved payment methods (bank links, cards)
  • Recurring buys, price alerts, and watchlists
  • Notification preferences and connected apps
  • Visible balance display (balances must be zero before closure)

Stays behind

  • Full transaction history retained for 5–7 years for AML/tax compliance
  • Identity verification documents (KYC records) retained per regulation
  • Records of withdrawals to external wallets (blockchain forensics)
  • Tax forms and statements (still issued for the year you transacted)
  • Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro/Advanced Trade are separate products

Before you delete

Coinbase will block closure if there are any crypto balances, USD balance, pending transfers, open orders, or recurring buys. Sell or withdraw everything FIRST and wait for transfers to settle. Download your full transaction history and year-end tax forms (Form 8949 / 1099) BEFORE closing — Coinbase keeps records but accessing them after closure can require a support ticket. Coinbase Wallet (self-custody) and Coinbase Exchange (institutional) are separate products with separate closures.

Download your data from Coinbase first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Open coinbase.com/reports
  2. 2Click 'Generate report'
  3. 3Pick the report type: transaction history (CSV), tax forms (PDF), or account statements
  4. 4Choose date range and click 'Generate'
  5. 5Download immediately or get an email link for large reports

Coinbase deletion FAQs

Why won't Coinbase let me close my account?+

Coinbase blocks closure if there's any non-zero balance (crypto OR fiat), pending transfers, open orders, recurring buys, an in-progress dispute, or active vault holdings. Sell or withdraw everything (including dust), cancel recurring buys, and wait for transfers to settle, then retry.

Will Coinbase delete my transaction history if I close my account?+

No. As a regulated US financial institution, Coinbase must retain transaction records for 5–7 years for AML, BSA, and IRS compliance. You lose login access but the underlying data is preserved on Coinbase's systems.

How do I download tax forms before closing?+

Go to coinbase.com/reports and generate Form 8949 (US taxable activity), 1099-MISC if you earned crypto rewards, and a full transaction CSV. Do this for every tax year you transacted because regaining access after closure requires support intervention.

Does closing Coinbase close Coinbase Wallet?+

No. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody product where you hold your own keys. It's a separate app/account from Coinbase the exchange. Closing your Coinbase exchange account does not affect Coinbase Wallet.

Can I close Coinbase if I have a balance of dust I can't sell?+

Small amounts of dust below minimum sell thresholds can be 'converted' to USD via the Trade interface, or sent to an external wallet using the cover-fee option. If genuinely stuck, contact support and request dust write-off — they may be able to zero the balance for closure.

What if I'm under investigation or have a frozen account?+

Coinbase will not process closure of an account that's under law-enforcement hold, AML review, or sanctions screen. Resolve the hold first, then submit closure. EU users have GDPR rights but financial-data retention exceptions apply.
