How to delete your Spotify account

Streaming & MediaOwned by Spotify Technology S.A.Self-service onlineDifficulty: EasyTime: 7 daysVerified June 2026

Spotify is the world's largest music streaming service, with over 600 million users. It stores your listening history, playlists, search queries, device data, IP address, and (if you've connected one) payment info. Closing your account removes most of this, but a few things — like recovery records and aggregated usage data — are retained for legal and fraud-prevention reasons.

Delete your Spotify account, step by step

  1. 1Log in at spotify.com on a desktop browser
  2. 2Go to Account > Privacy Settings
  3. 3Scroll to 'Close your Spotify account' and click 'Close account'
  4. 4Read what gets deleted, then click 'Continue'
  5. 5Confirm the email address shown is correct
  6. 6Open the confirmation email from Spotify and click 'Close my account'
  7. 7Your account is then marked for permanent deletion

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your username, display name, profile picture, and email
  • All playlists you created and saved music
  • Followers, followed users, and followed artists
  • Listening history and personalized recommendations
  • Saved podcasts and podcast subscriptions

Stays behind

  • Aggregated, anonymized listening data Spotify uses for analytics
  • Limited records Spotify keeps for fraud prevention and legal compliance
  • Any active Premium subscription (you must cancel separately)
  • Playlists you collaborated on remain visible to other collaborators

Before you delete

Cancel any Premium subscription FIRST — closing the account does not cancel billing if the subscription was set up through Apple, Google, or a partner like a mobile carrier. Download your playlists and listening history before closing because once it's gone there is no recovery.

Download your data from Spotify first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Go to spotify.com/account/privacy
  2. 2Scroll to 'Download your data'
  3. 3Click 'Request' next to Account data (and Extended streaming history if you want full history)
  4. 4Confirm via the email Spotify sends
  5. 5Your archive arrives by email in 5–30 days as a ZIP

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California

You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Spotify deletion FAQs

How long does it take to delete a Spotify account?+

Once you confirm via the email Spotify sends, the account is closed immediately. Personal data is permanently deleted after a roughly 7-day grace period during which you can change your mind by replying to the confirmation email.

Will deleting my Spotify account cancel my Premium subscription?+

Not always. If you subscribed directly through Spotify, closing the account ends the subscription at the end of the current billing period. If you signed up through Apple, Google, a mobile carrier, or a bundle like Hulu, you must cancel through that provider first or you'll keep getting charged.

Can I recover a deleted Spotify account?+

Within the 7-day grace period you can email Spotify support to cancel the deletion. After that, the account and all playlists are unrecoverable — but you can sign up again with the same email.

Will my collaborative playlists be deleted?+

No. Playlists you created stay if other people have saved them, and collaborative playlists remain available to the other collaborators. Your name will simply be removed from them.

Does Spotify let me delete just my listening history without deleting my account?+

Yes. Go to Account > Privacy Settings and click 'Clear my taste profile' to wipe personalized recommendations. You can also turn off 'Tailored ads' and request a data export to see exactly what they hold on you.
