How to delete your Duolingo account
Duolingo is the world's most-used language learning platform, with hundreds of millions of users learning everything from Spanish to Klingon. Duolingo stores your username, languages you study, daily streak history, XP and league rankings, friends, lesson progress, voice recordings (for speaking exercises), and (for Super Duolingo / Family Plan subscribers) billing info. Duolingo accounts often have multi-year streaks that users feel attached to — making deletion an emotional as well as a technical decision.
Delete your Duolingo account, step by step
- 1Sign in to duolingo.com on a desktop browser (account deletion is hidden in the mobile apps on some platforms)
- 2Click your avatar > 'Settings'
- 3Open the 'Account' tab
- 4Scroll to 'Delete Account' at the bottom
- 5Enter your password
- 6Click 'Delete Account'
- 7Account, streak, XP, and all course progress are wiped immediately

Before you delete
Deletion is INSTANT. Your streak (often years long), XP total, league progress, and friends are erased. Cancel Super Duolingo or Family Plan BEFORE deletion or you may keep getting charged via the App Store / Google Play. If you want to take a break without losing everything, use the in-app 'streak freeze' or 'pause subscription' options instead.
Download your data from Duolingo first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
Duolingo deletion FAQs
Is Duolingo deletion really instant?+
Yes. The moment you click delete, your streak, XP, course progress, and gems are erased. There is no 14-day grace period. If you have an emotional attachment to a long streak, consider just taking a break with streak freezes instead.
Will deleting Duolingo cancel Super Duolingo or Family Plan?+
If you subscribed directly through duolingo.com, the subscription is cancelled at the end of the current period. If you subscribed via the App Store or Google Play, you MUST cancel through those stores BEFORE deleting or you'll keep being charged.
What if I forget my Duolingo password?+
Reset via 'Forgot Password' on the login screen. If you signed up with Google or Facebook, recover access through that provider's flow. If you can't, contact support — they can verify identity via your registered email.
Can I delete just my streak and history without deleting my account?+
There's no first-party 'reset progress' button for streak/XP. You can reset individual courses (Settings > Reset progress for [language]) which wipes that language's lessons but keeps the account. To zero everything but keep the login, you'd basically need to reset each course manually.
What about my Family Plan members if I'm the organizer?+
Cancel the Family Plan FIRST and notify members. If you delete the account while you're still the organizer, family members lose Super Duolingo access at the next billing cycle.
Will my Duolingo Test results disappear?+
Duolingo English Test is a SEPARATE product from the language app. Deleting your duolingo.com account does not delete englishtest.duolingo.com. Manage and delete the test account separately at the test portal.
