How to delete your Letterboxd account

Streaming & MediaOwned by Letterboxd LimitedSelf-service onlineDifficulty: EasyTime: instantVerified June 2026

Letterboxd is a social network for film tracking and reviews, with around 14 million users keeping diaries of every movie they've watched. Letterboxd stores your watched list, watchlist, ratings, reviews, lists, likes, comments, followers, and (for Pro/Patron users) subscription history. Reviews on Letterboxd tend to be heavily indexed by Google, so a published profile is highly discoverable.

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your username, profile, avatar, and bio
  • Watched list, watchlist, ratings, and diary entries
  • Reviews, lists, likes, comments, and tags
  • Followers, following, and friend network
  • Pro/Patron subscription (cancel separately for billing)

Stays behind

  • Comments you left on others' reviews may persist as 'deleted user'
  • Lists where you were a contributor (not owner) stay with the remaining members
  • Cached reviews on Google for some time after deletion
  • Records Letterboxd retains for billing and trust & safety
  • Films you logged disappear from your account but don't affect global film pages

Before you delete

Deletion is immediate. Export your data first (Settings > Data) — you can get every film you logged plus reviews as CSV. Cancel Pro or Patron subscriptions BEFORE deletion. Reviews you wrote disappear with the account but cached copies may stick around on Google for weeks. If you have public lists that other users follow, those lists are removed and followers lose access.

Download your data from Letterboxd first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Open Settings > 'Data' tab
  2. 2Click 'Export your data'
  3. 3Letterboxd generates a ZIP with CSV files for diary, ratings, watchlist, reviews, lists, etc.
  4. 4Download is usually instant for typical users (large libraries can take a minute)

Want to take a break instead? Deactivate

Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.

  1. 1Letterboxd doesn't have a separate deactivation. Closest equivalent: set your profile to private (Settings > Profile > 'Show my activity to: Only me'), which hides everything without deletion.

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California

You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Letterboxd deletion FAQs

Is Letterboxd account deletion instant?+

Yes. There is no grace period. The moment you confirm, your watched list, ratings, reviews, and profile are erased. Export your data first via Settings > Data.

What format is the Letterboxd data export?+

ZIP with CSV files. You get diary.csv, ratings.csv, watchlist.csv, reviews.csv, lists, and likes. The CSV format is compatible with importing into other film-tracking services like Trakt or Simkl.

Will my Letterboxd reviews still show up on Google after deletion?+

For a few weeks, cached copies may appear in search results. Once Letterboxd returns 404s for your old profile URLs, Google drops them on its next crawl. You can submit URLs to Google's 'Remove outdated content' tool to speed up removal.

Can I delete just my reviews without deleting my account?+

Yes. Open each review > edit menu > 'Delete review'. There is no bulk-delete button in the UI, but the data export gives you a record so you can decide which to keep.

Will my Pro or Patron subscription be refunded?+

Cancel BEFORE deletion via Settings > Account. Letterboxd generally does not refund unused subscription time on closure. App Store / Google Play subscriptions cancel through those stores.

What about lists I contribute to but don't own?+

Collaborative lists remain with the owner. Your contributions stay attributed to a deleted user. Lists you OWN are deleted with the account; transfer ownership first if you want a list to survive.
