How to delete your Strava account
Strava is the largest social network for endurance athletes, with around 125 million users sharing runs, rides, and other workouts. Strava stores every activity you ever uploaded with full GPS tracks (where you live, work, and commute), heart-rate data, segment efforts, kudos and comments, photos from activities, your connected devices (Garmin, Apple Watch, etc.), and (for subscribers) heat-map and goals data. Strava activities expose surprisingly precise location data — a deleted Strava account is a meaningful privacy win.
Delete your Strava account, step by step
- 1Sign in to strava.com on a desktop browser
- 2Go to strava.com/athlete/delete_profile directly
- 3Or navigate: Settings (avatar > Settings) > 'My Account' > 'Delete Your Account'
- 4Click 'Begin'
- 5Re-enter your password
- 6Click 'Continue'
- 7Account is queued for permanent deletion after a 30-day grace period
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your athlete username, profile, avatar, bio, and weight/heart-zones
- ✓All uploaded activities (runs, rides, swims, etc.) with GPS tracks
- ✓Segments you created and starred
- ✓Followers, following, clubs, and challenges
- ✓Photos uploaded to activities and gear list
Stays behind
- ✗Segment leaderboard rankings (your name disappears but the segment remains)
- ✗Comments you left on others' activities (re-attributed)
- ✗Photos others tagged you in or saved from your activities
- ✗Records Strava retains for billing, fraud, and legal compliance
- ✗Linked devices' own copies of your workouts (Garmin Connect, etc.)
Before you delete
Strava has a 30-day grace period — logging back in cancels the deletion. Disconnect linked services (Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, Apple Health, MyFitnessPal) BEFORE deletion so they don't keep trying to push activities to a dead account. Export your activities first — Strava's bulk export covers all activities as a ZIP of GPX/TCX files. Cancel Strava subscription via Settings > Subscription. App Store/Google Play subscriptions cancel through those stores.
Download your data from Strava first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Go to strava.com/athlete/delete_your_account
- 2Click 'Get Started' under 'Download Request' (the same page handles export and deletion)
- 3Choose 'Request your archive'
- 4Strava prepares a ZIP with GPX/TCX/FIT files for every activity plus metadata
- 5Download link arrives by email within a few hours to a day
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1Strava has no separate deactivation, but you can hide existing activities (Activity Settings > Visibility > 'Only You')
- 2Disable Local Heatmap and Aggregated data sharing (Settings > Privacy Controls > Aggregated Data Usage)
- 3Stop uploading; account becomes dormant while data stays accessible to you
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
Strava deletion FAQs
Why is deleting Strava more sensitive than other social networks?+
Strava activities contain precise GPS tracks of where you run, ride, and live. Public activities have been used in OSINT investigations to identify military base locations, individual homes, and commute patterns. Deleting Strava removes a uniquely detailed location-history footprint.
Will Strava remove my segment leaderboard rankings?+
Your name is removed from leaderboards but the segments remain. The rankings re-shuffle without you. King/Queen of the Mountain titles you held will go to the next ranked athlete.
What about activities others kudo'd or commented on?+
Your activities are deleted, so the kudos and comments disappear with them. The kudos/comments on OTHERS' activities you left are kept (re-attributed to deleted user).
Will my Garmin or Apple Watch keep its own copy of my workouts?+
Yes. Garmin Connect, Apple Health, Wahoo Fitness, Zwift, and other apps you linked to Strava have their own copies. Deleting Strava only removes the Strava layer — the source devices and apps still hold the data. Delete those separately if you want full removal.
How do I bulk export Strava activities for backup?+
Use the 'Get Started' link on strava.com/athlete/delete_your_account (the deletion page also hosts the bulk export tool). The ZIP includes individual GPX/TCX/FIT files plus a CSV summary. Great for migrating to Garmin Connect, RunGap, or self-hosted alternatives.
Can I cancel my Strava subscription separately from deleting the account?+
Yes. Settings > Subscription > 'Cancel Subscription'. The account stays free-tier. App Store / Google Play subscriptions must be cancelled in those stores or charges continue.
