How to delete your Wattpad account
Wattpad is one of the world's largest user-generated storytelling platforms, where tens of millions of readers and writers publish serialized fiction, fanfiction and original novels. A Wattpad account holds far more than your stories: your username, email address, password, IP address, date of birth, self-reported gender/pronouns and country, profile and background photos, your "About me" description and any linked personal websites, plus every published and drafted story, private message, message-board post, comment, vote, reading list, reading history and follower/following relationship. Wattpad Corp. is based in Toronto and is owned by WEBTOON Entertainment Inc., itself majority-owned by South Korea's NAVER Corporation, so your data is processed in Canada and the US. Closing your account is genuinely self-service, but it is a two-stage process: six months of reversible deactivation, then a purge that leaves your comments and stories on Wattpad's servers in anonymized form.
Delete your Wattpad account, step by step
- 1Before you close anything, sign in to wattpad.com on a desktop browser, click your username in the top navigation bar, select 'Settings', scroll to 'Download your Personal Information' and choose HTML or JSON to save a copy of your data
- 2If you have a Wattpad Premium or Premium+ subscription, cancel it first through the Apple App Store or Google Play — Wattpad states it 'is not able to manage any subscription changes on your behalf', and closing your account does NOT cancel the subscription, so you would keep being billed
- 3Spend any purchased Coins sitting in your wallet — an account with an active subscription or purchased Coins is never purged, so your data would sit there indefinitely
- 4Still signed in at wattpad.com on a desktop computer, click your username in the upper right-hand corner
- 5Select 'Settings', then open the 'Account' tab
- 6Click 'Close Account' at the bottom of the page
- 7Fill in the mandatory information, including the reason you are leaving
- 8Check the box saying 'Yes, I'm sure. Please close my account'
- 9Enter your password
- 10Click 'Close Account' to confirm
- 11Verify it worked by visiting https://www.wattpad.com/user/yourusername (replacing 'yourusername' with your own) — you should see a 'User not found' page. Do NOT sign in again afterwards: logging back in automatically reopens the account via self-restoration
- 12On iOS instead: log in, tap 'Settings' in the top right corner, select 'Account Settings', tap 'Close Account', fill in the mandatory information, check the box, then tap 'Close My Account'
- 13On Android app version 10.64.0 or newer: log in, tap 'Settings' in the top right corner, select 'Account Settings', then select 'Close Account'. On 10.63.0 or older there is no in-app path — use the desktop web flow above, or submit a support request by clicking 'Fix a problem / Contact us' beside the help article at support.wattpad.com and an agent will close it for you
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Username and password (the username is released and can be claimed by another user)
- ✓Email address and IP address
- ✓Profile name, profile photo, background photo, 'About me'/profile description and self-input location
- ✓Any third-party websites or links you added to your profile in Account Settings
- ✓Your following list and follower list — you also disappear as a follower from every account you followed, lowering their follower counts
- ✓All user settings and preferences
Stays behind
- ✗Your comments on stories stay publicly visible on Wattpad — they are anonymized (detached from your username/email), not removed
- ✗Your published and drafted stories, private messages, public message-board posts, comments on profiles, reading history, notification history, library and reading lists, and votes are kept on Wattpad's internal servers in anonymized form
- ✗Account metadata Wattpad retains anonymized internally: user ID, account creation date, gender/pronouns, country, signup platform and date of birth
- ✗Any moderation actions taken against your account, stories or images
- ✗Everything is fully restorable — and still linked to you — for roughly six months after closure; nothing is purged before then
- ✗An active Premium/Premium+ subscription survives account closure and keeps billing you: Wattpad states that closing the account will not cancel a store subscription
- ✗Your closed profile can keep showing up in Google search results for several weeks afterwards, and stories others reposted, screenshotted or downloaded to EPUB are entirely outside Wattpad's control
Before you delete
The real gotchas: (1) Closure is a six-month deactivation, not an immediate delete — and simply signing in again silently reopens the account, which trips up people who log in "just to check". (2) An active Premium/Premium+ subscription or any purchased Coins in the wallet blocks the six-month purge entirely; Wattpad states it cannot manage subscription changes on your behalf AND that closing your account does not cancel the subscription, so cancel via Apple/Google and spend Coins first or you keep paying while your data persists. (3) You cannot reset the password of a closed account, so losing the password inside the six-month window means only Support can help you. (4) The username is released the moment you close; if anyone claims it, restoration is permanently impossible. By contrast, an email collision is fixable — free the email on the other account first. (5) Accounts closed by Wattpad for Code of Conduct/ToS violations can never be reopened, and losing access to the linked email address also makes restoration impossible. (6) Even after the purge, comments stay publicly on Wattpad in anonymized form, and stories/messages/reading and notification history persist anonymized on internal servers. (7) Wattpad separately closes accounts not logged into for five years, with 30 days' email notice — but accounts holding published stories, purchased Coins or an active subscription are exempt from that inactivity sweep. (8) Download your data (Settings > 'Download your Personal Information', HTML or JSON) before closing; the export is only available while the account is open. (9) Wattpad's help article self-contradicts on mobile: it says closure is desktop-only, then documents working iOS and Android 10.64.0+ in-app flows. Use desktop web to avoid the ambiguity.
Download your data from Wattpad first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Sign in to your Wattpad account on desktop web
- 2Click your username on the top navigation bar
- 3Select 'Settings' from the drop-down menu
- 4Scroll down the Settings page to 'Download your Personal Information'
- 5Select HTML (a 'wattpad-export' file you can open like a web page) or JSON (machine-readable, easier to move to another service)
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1Wattpad has no separate "deactivate" control — closing your account IS the deactivation. Following the Close Account flow deactivates the profile immediately (it stops being viewable, stories and reading lists come down, comments are anonymized, and you vanish as a follower from accounts you followed) and holds all data for approximately six months. To reactivate within that window, simply log in again with the username/email and password; the account self-restores within seconds, your comments and contributions are re-associated with your profile, your follows reappear, and you receive an email titled 'Your Wattpad account was successfully restored.' You cannot reset a forgotten password on a closed account. Restoration fails permanently if another user has claimed your old username, if the account was closed for a Code of Conduct/ToS violation, or if you have lost access to the linked email address; if your old email is now on another active Wattpad account, free it up on that account first and restoration will then work.
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Wattpad deletion FAQs
Does closing my Wattpad account actually delete my stories?+
Not in the way most people expect. Closing the account immediately removes your profile, stories and reading lists from public view, and after roughly six months Wattpad purges your identifying data (username, email, password, IP, photos, bio, follower lists, settings). But Wattpad's own data table states that published and drafted stories, private messages, public messages, comments on profiles, reading history, notification history and votes are 'anonymized and only available on our internal servers' — they are unlinked from you rather than erased. Your comments on other people's stories are anonymized but stay publicly visible on Wattpad. If you want your work gone from public view before you leave, delete or unpublish the individual stories yourself first.
Can I get my Wattpad account back after closing it?+
Usually yes, for approximately six months. Reopening is just logging back in: enter the username or email plus the password on any platform and the account self-restores, re-associating your comments and contributions with your profile, and you get an email titled 'Your Wattpad account was successfully restored.' Several things can block it. If you forgot the password you are stuck, because you cannot reset the password of a closed account — only Wattpad Support can help. If someone else has registered your old username, restoration is permanently impossible. If your old email is now attached to a different active Wattpad account, restoration is still possible but you must first change the email on that other account or close it, since Wattpad forbids two active accounts sharing an email. If the account was closed by Wattpad for a Code of Conduct or Terms of Service violation, it cannot be reopened at all. And if you have lost access to the linked email address itself, Wattpad says it is 'unable to reopen your account due to security reasons.' After six months the account is permanently purged and cannot be recovered by anyone, including Support.
Can I close my Wattpad account from my phone?+
Partly, and Wattpad's own help article contradicts itself here. One line insists closure 'is only available on the web on a regular computer, you cannot close your account on the app or a mobile browser' — but the same article then gives working in-app steps for iOS ('Settings' > 'Account Settings' > 'Close Account') and for Android on app version 10.64.0 or newer, and separately says that if you are already logged in on mobile web you can close your account from that page. Treat desktop web as the reliable path. If you are on Android 10.63.0 or older, or the mobile route does not present the option, either log in on a regular computer or submit a support request via 'Fix a problem / Contact us' at support.wattpad.com and an agent will close it for you.
I closed my account but my data is still there — why hasn't Wattpad deleted it?+
Because closure is a six-month deactivation first, purge second. Wattpad deliberately keeps everything so you can change your mind. Two exceptions stop the purge indefinitely: an active Premium/Premium+ subscription, or purchased Coins sitting in your digital wallet. If either is present at the six-month mark, the account is not purged. Worse, Wattpad warns that closing your account does not cancel a subscription bought through an app store — so you can end up still being charged while your data sits there in full. Cancel through the App Store or Google Play and spend the Coins before you close.
Will someone else be able to take my Wattpad username?+
Yes. Wattpad states plainly that when you close your account you are giving up your username, and if someone creates an account with the same username you will no longer be able to restore your original account. If you care about the handle, closing the account is the fastest way to lose it — and losing it also destroys your six-month window to reverse the decision.
How do I make Wattpad delete my data faster, or under GDPR?+
There is no self-service instant-erasure button; the six-month cycle is the documented default. To make a formal access, correction or deletion request, email [email protected], or write to the Privacy Team at 36 Wellington St. E., Suite 200, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5E 1C7. If you are in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, Wattpad Corp. is the controller and you can also reach its data protection representative, Data Rep, at [email protected], 77 Camden Street Lower, Dublin D02 XE80, Ireland, or 107-111 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2AB, United Kingdom — Wattpad asks that non-privacy matters not be sent to DataRep. Note that Wattpad says it complies 'to the extent required by law or our policies, and subject to any limitations in our systems', and its policy expressly reserves that anonymized comments and contributions will remain on the Service.
