How to delete your Tumblr account

Social MediaOwned by AutomatticSelf-service onlineDifficulty: EasyTime: instantVerified June 2026

Tumblr is a microblogging platform owned by Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com) since 2019. Tumblr stores all your posts, reblogs, asks, replies, every blog you've created (you can have several under one account), follows, likes, messages, and the contents of your customizable theme/HTML. Tumblr is one of the rare major platforms with no deletion grace period — once you confirm, your account and every blog under it are gone immediately.

Delete your Tumblr account, step by step

  1. 1Log in to tumblr.com on a desktop browser
  2. 2Click the account icon (top-right) > 'Settings'
  3. 3Scroll to the 'Delete account' link at the bottom of the Account tab
  4. 4Re-enter your email and password
  5. 5Click 'Delete everything'
  6. 6Confirm — account and ALL blogs under it are deleted immediately, no grace period

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your primary blog and ALL sideblogs under the same account
  • Every post, reblog, photo set, audio, and video upload you authored
  • Followers, following, and your dashboard activity history
  • Asks you received and replies you sent
  • Saved drafts, queued posts, and tagged organization system

Stays behind

  • Reblogs of your posts on OTHER people's blogs remain (they are independent copies)
  • Messages sent through Tumblr Chat persist in recipients' inboxes
  • Cached posts and media on Google and the Internet Archive can linger for weeks
  • Records Tumblr/Automattic retains for fraud, billing, and legal compliance
  • Any DMCA takedown history and trust & safety flags tied to your username

Before you delete

Tumblr deletion is IMMEDIATE and irreversible — there is no 30-day grace window. If you have multiple sideblogs you only want to delete one of, do that individually first (Settings > the sideblog > 'Delete this blog'). Cancel Tumblr Premium and Blaze before deleting. Download your archive first; reblogs of your posts on other people's blogs remain because reblogs are independent copies on Tumblr.

Download your data from Tumblr first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Go to Settings > select the blog you want to export
  2. 2Scroll to 'Export {blog-name}'
  3. 3Click 'Export'
  4. 4Tumblr builds a ZIP with every post, asset, and conversation
  5. 5Download link arrives by email and on the settings page — link expires after a few days

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California

You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

Tumblr deletion FAQs

Is Tumblr account deletion instant or is there a grace period?+

Instant and irreversible. Unlike Twitter/X, Facebook, and Instagram, Tumblr has no 14- or 30-day cancellation window. Once you click 'Delete everything', your primary blog and all sideblogs are gone.

Can I delete just one sideblog without deleting my whole Tumblr account?+

Yes. Go to Settings > pick the sideblog > 'Delete this blog' (the option only appears on sideblogs, not your primary blog). Deleting a sideblog leaves your account and other sideblogs intact.

What happens to reblogs of my posts when I delete?+

Reblogs are independent copies on the rebloggers' own blogs. They survive your deletion. The 'source' link will break (404) but the content stays. There is no built-in way to retract reblogs.

Can someone take my Tumblr URL after I delete?+

Yes. After deletion, your blog URL (yourname.tumblr.com) is generally freed and another user can register it. If your URL has any value or risk of impersonation, consider transferring it to a sideblog of another account before deleting.

Will Tumblr keep my email and login data after deletion?+

Automattic keeps a minimal record of email and IP for fraud and trust & safety purposes (typically tied to violation history). For most users the account login record is removed promptly. EU/UK users can file a GDPR erasure request for these residual records.

Does deleting Tumblr also delete my WordPress.com account?+

No. Tumblr and WordPress.com share a parent company (Automattic) but the accounts are separate. Delete each through its own flow.
