How to delete your RuneScape account
RuneScape is Jagex's long-running MMORPG, split into RuneScape (RS3) and Old School RuneScape (OSRS), with a modern login system built around the unified "Jagex account", which Jagex says "allows you to bring up to 20 characters together under one login". Jagex's privacy policy groups what it holds into Identity, Contact, Financial, Transaction, Technical, Profile, Usage and Game Data — real name and date of birth, email, phone and postal address, every membership, Bond and Treasure Hunter key payment, IP addresses, device data and geolocation, your two-step authentication and marketing settings, your Player Support ticket history, and your characters' stats, progress and offence records. There is no delete button in RuneScape, the Jagex Launcher or Jagex account management. Deletion exists only as a data-protection request submitted through a Jagex Player Support form, and it permanently disables the Jagex account and every character linked to it.
Delete your RuneScape account, step by step
- 1Cancel any active membership first — the deletion request does not stop billing. If your character is linked to a Jagex account, log in to Jagex Account Management at https://account.runescape.com/subscriptions, open the "Subscriptions" tab and click "Manage" on the character. If you never upgraded, go to https://payments.jagex.com/manage/subscriptions and choose "Log in with RuneScape username" at the bottom. If you subscribed through Apple, Google, Steam, PayPal, BoaCompra/PagSeguro or Boku, you must cancel with that provider — Jagex cannot do it for you (for Boku, reply STOP or CANCEL to the confirmation text message).
- 2Export your data before you delete — you cannot log in afterwards. Self-service: log in at https://account.jagex.com/manage/profile, scroll to "Export Data", follow the prompts to verify the request and download the JSON file. That file covers only the Jagex account; Jagex states "Data held about any of your RuneScape characters is not included", so for character and game data also submit the "Request your personal data" flow at https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4416629890961-Request-your-personal-data and click "MAKE A REQUEST".
- 3Open the official article "Delete your personal data" at https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4416629741073-Delete-your-personal-data (the Jagex-account version of the same page is "Disable account | Jagex Account" at https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/34581356139921-Disable-account-Jagex-Account). You can also start from "Your personal data rights" (https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360001370829-Your-personal-data-rights) and pick "Remove my personal data and permanently disable my account".
- 4Click the "DELETE YOUR DATA" button. It opens the Jagex Player Support data-request form at https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000041149 — a support ticket, not an email.
- 5Log in when prompted. Jagex's instruction is explicit: "When making your request select any character when prompted to log in", and "If you log in with a Jagex account, data for all linked characters and the Jagex account will be permanently disabled." One request covers everything.
- 6Complete the form with your contact email and submit it. Jagex states: "This will permanently disable your Jagex account and all associated characters."
- 7Watch your email for the acknowledgement and any identity-verification questions. Jagex only acts on a "verifiable request", so an unanswered verification email will stall it.
- 8Wait for confirmation. Jagex says "We aim to resolve most requests within 30 days of receipt, but in some more complex situations, this could be extended to 90 days." US state-law requests run on a separate 45-day clock, extendable once by a further 45 days.
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your Jagex account and every RuneScape / Old School RuneScape character linked to it (up to 20) — "permanently disabled", with no documented way back in
- ✓Identity and contact data: your name, date of birth, email address, phone number and any postal address held on file
- ✓Profile data: password, two-step authentication settings, game and communication preferences, and marketing consents
- ✓Your Player Support ticket history and correspondence with Jagex
- ✓Technical data tied to you as a person: IP addresses, device identifiers and geolocation records, subject to Jagex's retention exceptions
- ✓Practical access to everything on the characters — bank, items, unspent Bonds, remaining membership time, Treasure Hunter keys and RuneCoins — all forfeited, and Jagex's Subscription Terms say unused Subscription time, virtual currencies and items are not refunded
Stays behind
- ✗Basic customer records — Contact, Identity, Financial and Transaction Data — which Jagex says it must keep "for six tax years plus the current tax year" under tax and accounting law
- ✗Records relating to bans and offences, retained for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims; the privacy policy describes "deleting accounts if they are inactive or if an account has had a ban on it for 6 years or longer"
- ✗Game data that Jagex says is "tied to the in-game character and not to you directly or indirectly as a living person" — Jagex says this "does not constitute personal data" and is therefore not covered by erasure
- ✗Anonymised and aggregated data: "we may anonymise your Personal Data (so that it can no longer be associated with you) for research or statistical purposes, in which case we may use this information indefinitely without further notice to you"
- ✗Payment records held by your payment provider — PayPal, your card issuer, Apple, Google, Steam, BoaCompra/PagSeguro or Boku — which Jagex does not control
- ✗Anything already public outside Jagex: quoted forum posts, HiScores scrapes, wiki pages, YouTube videos, Discord clan logs and third-party tracker sites
Before you delete
The single biggest gotcha: there is no delete button anywhere in RuneScape, the Jagex Launcher or Jagex account management — account management only offers an "Export Data" option. Deletion exists solely as a data-protection request submitted through a Jagex Player Support ticket form (ticket_form_id=360000041149), reachable from the "Delete your personal data" / "Disable account | Jagex Account" articles, and it is account-wide: one request disables the Jagex account and all linked characters, and Jagex explicitly cannot unlink a character to spare it. Cancel your membership separately first — the current cancellation route is https://account.runescape.com/subscriptions (Subscriptions tab, then Manage), or https://payments.jagex.com/manage/subscriptions if you never upgraded to a Jagex account; anything bought via Apple, Google, Steam, PayPal, BoaCompra/PagSeguro or Boku must be cancelled with that provider. Unspent Bonds, remaining membership days, RuneCoins and Treasure Hunter keys are forfeited, and the Subscription Terms say unused Subscription payments, virtual currencies and items are not refunded. Export first — the Jagex account JSON export at account.jagex.com/manage/profile does not include character data, so submit the "Request your personal data" form as well if you want your game history. Finally, Jagex retains Contact, Identity, Financial and Transaction Data for six tax years plus the current tax year and keeps ban/offence records for the defence of legal claims, so "deleted" means disabled and de-identified where the law allows, not erased from every system.
Download your data from RuneScape first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1There are two official exports; do both before any deletion request, because you lose login access once the account is disabled.
- 2Jagex account self-service export (fast): log in to account management at https://account.jagex.com/manage/profile, scroll down to "Export Data", follow the on-screen prompts to verify the request, and download the JSON file. Jagex notes "Data held about any of your RuneScape characters is not included".
- 3Character and game data (ticket): open "Request your personal data" at https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4416629890961-Request-your-personal-data and click "MAKE A REQUEST".
- 4Log in when prompted — "When making your request, select any character when prompted to log in"; a Jagex account request covers all linked characters.
- 5Submit the form. Jagex can disclose identity data, contact data, technical data, profile data and game usage data, but will withhold anything that affects other players' rights, reveals trade secrets or Jagex IP, or exposes "the technical operation of our anti-cheat detection tools".
- 6Expect a response within 30 days, extendable to 90 days for complex requests (US state-law requests: 45 days, extendable once by 45).
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1RuneScape has no formal "deactivate" or temporary-suspension option. The reversible alternative is to stop paying and stop playing:
- 2Cancel the membership so it does not auto-renew. Jagex account: log in at https://account.runescape.com/subscriptions, open the "Subscriptions" tab, then "Manage" on the character. No Jagex account yet: https://payments.jagex.com/manage/subscriptions, then "Log in with RuneScape username" at the bottom.
- 3If you subscribed through Apple, Google, Steam, PayPal, BoaCompra/PagSeguro or Boku, cancel with that provider instead — Jagex cannot cancel a third-party subscription.
- 4Optionally hide characters from the Jagex Launcher: click "Manage Characters" in the launcher, or go to https://account.runescape.com/en-GB/game, click "Edit Characters", then click "Hide" on each character.
- 5Stop logging in. When the paid term expires the account reverts to free-to-play and the characters remain intact and recoverable — note only that Jagex may remove a character name "due to inactivity", and the privacy policy allows deletion of long-inactive accounts.
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
RuneScape deletion FAQs
Can I delete just one character instead of my whole Jagex account?+
No. Jagex's support article is unambiguous: "It's not possible to remove a character from a Jagex account once it's been imported." The same article rules out reverting to your old RuneScape login, moving characters between Jagex accounts, and merging Jagex accounts. The only supported workaround is cosmetic — click "Manage Characters" in the Jagex Launcher, or go to Jagex account character management at https://account.runescape.com/en-GB/game, click "Edit Characters", then click "Hide" on the character so it stops appearing in the launcher. A deletion request is all-or-nothing: it disables the Jagex account and every linked character together.
Is deleting my RuneScape account reversible — can I get my main back later?+
Treat it as permanent. Jagex describes the outcome as "permanently disable your Jagex account and all associated characters" and publishes no reactivation window, grace period or restoration process. That is very different from a lapsed membership, where the account simply reverts to free-to-play and the character survives. If you are only burnt out, cancel the subscription and stop logging in — the characters stay recoverable. Only submit the deletion request if you are certain, and export your data first, because you cannot log in afterwards to retrieve anything.
Will my character name be freed up for someone else after deletion?+
Jagex does not promise this either way. What is documented on the Character names article is that names can be lost to inactivity — "If your character doesn't have a character name it may have been deemed inappropriate or removed due to inactivity" — and that after a voluntary name change the old name stays reserved to the character "for at least 35 days, or for up to 6 months, depending on how long you had it". Jagex also states it is "unable to intervene with freeing unavailable character names or manually apply any desired name to a character", so deleting your account is not a reliable way to hand a name to a friend or an alt.
Do I have to cancel my membership before requesting deletion?+
Yes, cancel it yourself — the data request does not stop billing. Per Jagex's "Managing Subscriptions" article: if your character is on a Jagex account, log in to https://account.runescape.com/subscriptions, open the "Subscriptions" tab and select "Manage" on that character; if you have not upgraded, use https://payments.jagex.com/manage/subscriptions and choose "Log in with RuneScape username". Subscriptions bought through Apple, Google, Steam, PayPal, BoaCompra/PagSeguro or Boku must be cancelled there — the Subscription Terms say you "can cancel your Subscription at any time via the third party you signed up with". Cancelling outside a cooling-off period does not refund the current term ("you'll keep your Subscription benefits until the expiry date of the current Subscription term"), and because "renewal payments may be taken up to 72 hours before your current Subscription period ends", cancelling inside that window may still be charged.
How long does Jagex actually take to delete my account?+
Jagex's stated target is "most requests within 30 days of receipt, but in some more complex situations, this could be extended to 90 days." For US state-privacy-law requests the published figure is different: 45 days, "extended once by an additional 45 days when reasonably necessary and with prior notice". The clock runs from a verifiable request, so it effectively stalls if you ignore an identity-verification email — Jagex requires "sufficient information that allows Us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom We collected Personal Information". If 30 days pass with no substantive reply, chase it at [email protected] quoting your ticket number.
Why is some of my data still there after Jagex confirmed the deletion?+
Because the right to erasure is not absolute — Jagex's privacy policy says the right "is not absolute, and there are circumstances where we do not need to comply with the request", and it names the exceptions. Contact, Identity, Financial and Transaction Data are kept "for six tax years plus the current tax year" for tax purposes; accounts carrying a ban are only deleted once the ban is "6 years or longer" old; game data attached to the character rather than to you as an identifiable person is not treated as personal data at all; and anonymised data may be used "indefinitely". So the account being unusable and the data being gone are two different milestones. If you think Jagex has over-retained, UK residents can file a formal data protection complaint from the "Your personal data rights" page, and Jagex says "We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days."
