How to delete your Minecraft account

Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, developed by Mojang Studios and owned by Microsoft, with well over 300 million copies sold across Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Your Minecraft identity spans two linked things: a Microsoft account, and a "Minecraft profile" holding your username and player UUID, skins and capes, game licences and purchase history, Realms subscriptions and cloud-hosted worlds, friends and multiplayer settings, chat and report data, plus device, IP and gameplay telemetry collected under Microsoft's privacy statement. Deletion is unusually destructive: Mojang confirms it permanently removes your ownership of every Minecraft game on the account, and you would have to buy them again. There is no self-service "delete my account" button anywhere — deletion is a support ticket handled by Minecraft Player Care, followed by a 30-day grace period. Note the scope: Mojang's own GDPR page directs the deletion request route at "Minecraft Java Edition Players with a Minecraft Profile". If you only ever played Bedrock on a console or phone, you have a Microsoft account rather than a separate Minecraft profile, and your route is the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard and — for full erasure — closing the Microsoft account.

Delete your Minecraft account, step by step

  1. 1Before you start, cancel any Minecraft Realms subscription through the store you bought it from, and spend any Minecoin balance. Deletion cancels Realms and nothing is refunded; Minecoins and Marketplace content are not mentioned in Mojang's deletion notice at all, so treat any balance as money you will lose
  2. 2Open the official Minecraft data protection page at https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/privacy/gdpr and read the section headed "How can I access or delete my data?"
  3. 3If you only want to review, download or clear the telemetry and activity data Microsoft holds, click "Microsoft Privacy Dashboard" on that page, sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Minecraft, and use the data cards there — this does NOT delete your Minecraft profile or your game ownership
  4. 4To delete the Minecraft profile itself, click "submitting a request to support" on the same page. That opens the Minecraft Support request form at https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001225811 (the same destination as the official shortlink aka.ms/Minecraft-Support). Mojang scopes this route to Java Edition players holding a Minecraft profile — if you only have a Microsoft account, skip to step 9
  5. 5Fill in the form using the email address attached to the account, give your Minecraft username, and state clearly that you are making a data deletion request for your Minecraft profile
  6. 6If your copy was bought before July 25, 2022, include your transaction ID or gift-code/prepaid PIN as proof of ownership — Minecraft Player Care uses these to verify you own the account
  7. 7Submit the request and reply to any verification email from Minecraft Player Care
  8. 8Once the request is accepted you get a 30-day grace period. After it expires your Minecraft account, your access to and ownership of every Minecraft game on it, your Realms subscription, and your Minecraft: Java Edition / Minecraft for Windows / Minecraft Dungeons game data are gone forever

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • ✓Your Minecraft account and Minecraft profile (username, player UUID, skins and capes)
  • ✓Your ownership of and access to every Minecraft game licensed to that account — Mojang states this will be 'gone forever', and you must repurchase to play again
  • ✓Your Minecraft Realms subscription, which Mojang confirms is cancelled as part of the deletion
  • ✓Game data associated with the account for Minecraft: Java Edition, Minecraft for Windows and Minecraft Dungeons, including Realms-hosted worlds
  • ✓If you also close the Microsoft account: the underlying Microsoft/Xbox identity, and after the 30- or 60-day re-open window Microsoft deletes your data and content

Stays behind

  • ✗Single-player worlds saved locally on your own hard drive — those files stay on your PC, you simply cannot launch them without a valid account, which Mojang confirms for players who lost account access
  • ✗Everything held by third-party multiplayer servers: your builds, chat logs, ban/appeal records, IP logs and plugin databases belong to those server operators, not Mojang, and must be requested from them separately
  • ✗Your Microsoft account and all other Microsoft/Xbox data (Outlook mail, OneDrive, Xbox gamertag, other game licences) unless you close the Microsoft account separately
  • ✗Minecoins and Marketplace entitlements are not covered by Mojang's deletion notice — they attach to the Microsoft/Xbox identity, so they are only destroyed if you close the Microsoft account itself
  • ✗Purchase, payment and tax records held by Microsoft and by payment processors (PayPal, Braintree, Skrill, DIBS, Adyen, the Microsoft Store, or a console store), retained for accounting and legal purposes
  • ✗Content about you elsewhere: YouTube/Twitch videos, wiki pages, Marketplace listings, and third-party username-lookup sites that cached your name, UUID and skin
  • ✗During the 30-day grace period the account still exists and can be restored by contacting support

Before you delete

The big gotcha is that Minecraft deletion destroys your game licences, not just your data — Mojang explicitly warns your ownership of the games is 'gone forever' and you must repurchase. There is no delete button in the launcher, on minecraft.net or in your Minecraft profile; the only routes are a support ticket (form ID 360001225811, confirmed as the destination of the official aka.ms/Minecraft-Support shortlink) or, for the wider Microsoft identity, closing the Microsoft account. SCOPE: Mojang's GDPR page aims the ticket route at Java Edition players with a Minecraft profile and sends Microsoft-account players to the Privacy Dashboard, which lets you view, export and clear activity data but does NOT delete the Minecraft profile or game ownership. Minecoins and Marketplace content are absent from Mojang's deletion notice and sit on the Microsoft/Xbox identity — spend any balance before filing rather than relying on either outcome. Mojang account migration ended December 18, 2023, so the old mojang.com deletion setting is gone and Support will not help with migration issues. Two blockers when closing the Microsoft account: if you recently reset all your sign-in verification details you must wait 60 days, and you must be able to sign in. Child accounts are governed by the Microsoft Family group, so the family organizer must act. Minecraft Player Care cannot provide account support for Microsoft Store purchases made after July 25, 2022, or for purchases from unauthorized resellers or other players. Finally, the old public help centre at minecrafthelp.zendesk.com has been retired and now serves only a 'page is no longer available' notice — use help.minecraft.net for all support articles.

Download your data from Minecraft first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Sign in to the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard at https://account.microsoft.com/privacy with the Microsoft account you use for Minecraft — Mojang's GDPR page points players on a Microsoft account here to 'access and control your data'

  3. 3Wait for Microsoft to build the archive (this can take hours to a few days), then return to the dashboard and download the ZIP before it expires

Minecraft deletion FAQs

Can I delete my Minecraft account without deleting my Microsoft account?+

Yes. Mojang's GDPR page is explicit that a Microsoft account and a Mojang account are 'separate accounts'. Submitting a data deletion request through the Minecraft Support form (help.minecraft.net request form 360001225811) deletes the Minecraft profile and its game ownership while leaving your Microsoft account, Outlook mail and other Xbox games intact. Minecraft Support's own routing guidance says that once the Mojang profile deletion is complete you should 'visit Microsoft Support to delete the rest of your data' if you want the Microsoft account gone too.

Will I lose the game I paid for if I delete my Minecraft account?+

Yes, permanently. Mojang states that after the 30-day grace period 'your Minecraft account and your ability to access any games you currently own will be gone forever, as will your ownership of these games.' There is no refund and no way to transfer the licence. Mojang's own wording is that if you wish to play again you will 'have to create a new account by logging in to Minecraft with your Microsoft Account and purchase any game or games you wish to play again.'

I requested deletion but changed my mind — can I cancel it?+

Yes, if you act inside the 30-day grace period. Mojang's official instruction is to 'contact support asap via aka.ms/Minecraft-Support' — that shortlink resolves to help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001225811, the same form you used to request deletion. Once the 30 days elapse the deletion is irreversible and support cannot restore the account or your licences.

Does deleting my account free up my Minecraft username for someone else?+

Mojang does not promise either way. Its guidance to players who permanently lost account access is that capes and skins 'are not recoverable' and that when you create a new account 'you'll have to create a new username; your previous username may or may not be available.' Treat username release as unpredictable — if you care about a name, change it on the account before deleting rather than assuming you can reclaim it.

Why is Minecraft Support asking me for a transaction ID?+

Player Care uses transaction IDs to verify ownership of Mojang accounts and Minecraft purchases made before July 25, 2022. Acceptable proof includes a PayPal transaction ID or receipt number, a Braintree, Skrill (formerly Moneybookers), DIBS or Adyen transaction ID, a gift code (five sets of five characters for codes bought after September 2015, three sets of four for older ones), or a prepaid card PIN. For Microsoft Store purchases made after that date, Minecraft Player Care cannot provide account support — those go to Microsoft Support.

What happened to the old 'delete account' setting on mojang.com?+

It is gone. Minecraft Support confirms 'the migration process for Mojang accounts officially ended as of December 18, 2023' and that it 'will no longer assist with migration-related queries.' Every supported platform now requires a Microsoft account, so the old mojang.com account settings page and its self-service deletion link no longer apply. Deletion now runs through the Minecraft Support request form, with the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard covering access and export.

I only play Bedrock on console — does the Minecraft support form apply to me?+

Probably not. Mojang scopes the 'submit a request to support' deletion route to 'Minecraft Java Edition Players with a Minecraft Profile'. For players on a Microsoft account across all Minecraft titles, its instruction is that 'you can access and control your data via the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard'. If you only ever played Bedrock on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or mobile, use the Privacy Dashboard for access and export, and close the Microsoft account for full erasure. Minecraft Support also directs sign-in problems on those platforms to Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Support directly.

What happens to my Realms subscription and Minecoins?+

Mojang confirms deletion cancels any Realms subscription and deletes the Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft for Windows game data associated with your account, including Realms-hosted worlds. Minecoins and Marketplace content are NOT mentioned in that notice — they attach to your Microsoft/Xbox identity rather than the Mojang profile, so do not assume either that they survive or that they are refunded. Cancel recurring Realms billing through the store you bought it from before deleting: Minecraft Support routes subscription changes and refunds to Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Support.
