How to delete your PlayStation Network account

PlayStation Network (PSN) is the online identity behind every PS3, PS4, PS5, and PS Vita. Sony stores your online ID, real name, address, payment methods, full trophy and gameplay history, every digital game and DLC you purchased, friends and party history, screenshots and clips you saved, and PlayStation Plus subscription records. Deleting PSN is highly destructive — you lose your entire digital library and trophies forever.

Delete your PlayStation Network account, step by step

  1. 1Sign in to your PSN account on a web browser at account.sony.com
  2. 2Open the support contact form at playstation.com/support
  3. 3Select 'Account & Security' > 'Close PSN Account'
  4. 4Or call PlayStation Support (US: 1-800-345-7669) and request account closure
  5. 5Confirm identity by providing your sign-in ID (email), online ID, date of birth, and the answer to your security question
  6. 6Sony emails confirmation and closes the account within 2–4 weeks

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your PSN online ID and sign-in email
  • Every digital game, DLC, theme, and avatar you purchased
  • Trophy history, platinum trophies, and gameplay statistics
  • Friends list, party history, and Communities membership
  • Captures (screenshots and video clips) stored on PSN

Stays behind

  • Physical disc-based games still work without PSN sign-in (offline content)
  • Records Sony retains for billing, tax, anti-fraud, and consumer-protection compliance
  • Trophy data cached on third-party sites like PSNProfiles
  • Messages you sent in chats persist in recipients' inboxes
  • Save data may remain on individual consoles unless you wiped them

Before you delete

Closing PSN PERMANENTLY revokes access to every digital game, DLC, PS Plus content, and avatar you ever purchased — there is no refund and no transfer to another account. Trophies and platinum history are erased. Use 'Initialize PS5/PS4' or sign-out flow on every console before requesting closure. PlayStation Plus subscriptions need separate cancellation in Subscription Management. If you have PS Stars points, spend them first.

Download your data from PlayStation Network first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Sony does not offer a self-service data export tool. EU/UK and California users can file a GDPR Article 15 or CCPA right-to-know request through the PlayStation Privacy form at playstation.com/legal/privacy-policy/ to receive a copy of personal data within 30 days.

If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California

You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

PlayStation Network deletion FAQs

Will I lose my PlayStation games if I close PSN?+

Yes. Every digital game, DLC, avatar, theme, and PS Plus benefit tied to the account is forfeited with no refund. Disc-based games still work offline. Sony does not support transferring purchases to a different PSN account.

Can I close my PSN account without calling support?+

Not reliably. The only documented path is via Sony's web support form or by phone. Some users have reported success with the in-console 'Account' menu but the official channel is contacting PlayStation Support.

What happens to my trophies?+

Trophies are tied to your PSN profile. When the account is closed they're erased and not recoverable. Third-party trophy trackers like PSNProfiles may keep cached copies of public trophy data.

How do I remove just my credit card without closing PSN?+

Sign in at account.sony.com > 'Payment & Subscriptions' > remove payment methods. You can also turn off PS Plus auto-renewal here. This avoids the full account-closure path if your goal is just stopping charges.

What if I want to change my online ID instead of closing?+

Sony has allowed online-ID changes since 2019 — go to Account Management > Profile > Online ID. The first change is free; subsequent changes have a fee. Some older PS3/PS4 games don't fully support ID changes and may show your old ID.

Will closing PSN cancel my PlayStation Plus subscription?+

Yes for the auto-renewal, but it's safer to cancel PS Plus first to avoid issues. You will not get a prorated refund for unused PS Plus time when the account closes.
