How to delete your GIPHY account
GIPHY is the world's largest GIF and sticker library and search engine, powering the GIF pickers built into apps like Slack, Discord, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Signal through the GIPHY API. Operated by Giphy, Inc. — acquired by Shutterstock from Meta in June 2023 after the UK CMA forced Meta to divest it — the service stores your email address, username, password, avatar, display name, contact name, basic demographic information, channel description and links to your website and social profiles, plus every GIF, sticker, comment and picture you have uploaded. Its privacy policy states it also automatically records 'your IP address, device ID, user query information, and cookie information' whenever you search for, select, view or receive a GIF, and that it may collect mobile advertising identifiers such as Apple's IDFA and the Google Ad ID for ad targeting. Because GIPHY is a public-display syndication service, uploads spread to third-party apps and CDNs long before you ever think about deleting the account.
Delete your GIPHY account, step by step
- 1Sign in to giphy.com on a desktop browser
- 2Click the 'My Channel' dropdown at the top right of the page
- 3Select 'Settings' from the dropdown menu
- 4Scroll to the 'Channel Privacy' section
- 5Select 'Delete Your Account' and confirm when prompted
- 6On mobile instead: tap the person icon at the bottom of the screen, tap the wheel (gear) icon at the top right, navigate to 'Account Settings', then select 'Delete Your Account'
- 7Before deleting, remove any GIFs you want gone — they can only be deleted one at a time. On desktop: hover a GIF on your channel page and click the edit pencil in its upper-right corner (on a GIF's detail page the pencil is at the lower right of the GIF), then choose 'Delete This GIF' at the lower right of the edit panel. In the GIPHY app: open the GIF, tap the three vertical dots below it, then tap 'Delete'. GIF deletion is not available on GIPHY's mobile website at all
- 8If the delete option does not appear or the deletion fails, open a ticket at https://support.giphy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or email [email protected] — the privacy policy says 'If you have trouble deleting your Account, please reach out to us at [email protected]'
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your ability to log in, upload or manage content — GIPHY states 'deletion is forever and we will not be able to recover your information if you decide to sign up again later'
- ✓Access through your account to the profile data you supplied: email address, username, password, avatar/profile picture, display name, contact name, channel description, location and links to your website and social media profiles
- ✓The link between your account and the personal data GIPHY holds — the policy's exact wording is that 'any association between your Account and Personal Data we store will no longer be accessible through your Account'
- ✓Your channel as a signed-in destination (there is no reactivation window and no reserved username)
Stays behind
- ✗Any public activity from your account prior to deletion — the privacy policy states it 'will remain stored on our servers and may remain accessible to the public'
- ✗GIFs you uploaded that were subsequently shared by other users: GIPHY says it 'may retain and continue to use and disclose certain User Content (e.g., a GIF you provided that was subsequently shared by another user) and related data (e.g., technical specifications of a GIF)' after your account is terminated
- ✗GIFs already distributed through the GIPHY API into Slack, Discord, Instagram, WhatsApp, Signal and other integrations, plus copies cached on CDNs, in chat histories, in search-engine indexes and on third-party sites — GIPHY cannot pull these back
- ✗Depersonalised and aggregated usage, search and analytics data, which GIPHY says it retains after the account-linked retention period 'but not in a way that would identify you personally'. No end date is stated
- ✗Personal data GIPHY keeps where 'necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes or collect fees owed, or is otherwise permitted or required by applicable law'
- ✗Data already shared with ad networks, service providers and analytics partners (the policy discloses use of Google Analytics with IP anonymisation) under their own retention policies
Before you delete
The single biggest gotcha: deleting the account does NOT reliably delete your uploaded GIFs and stickers. The privacy policy says public activity prior to deletion stays on GIPHY's servers and may remain publicly accessible, and that GIPHY may keep using and disclosing User Content another user has shared. Delete GIFs individually first (desktop or the app only — mobile web has no GIF-delete option, and there is no bulk-delete anywhere), then delete the account. There is no undo, no deactivation state, no data-export button and no reserved username. GIPHY specifies no fixed retention period: it keeps personal data 'for as long as you have an open Account with us', longer where legally necessary, then retains some in depersonalised or aggregated form with no stated end date. Deletion is a single web action with no email confirmation loop documented, so treat the click as final. Because GIPHY was Meta-owned from 2020 to June 2023, GIFs from that era may also sit in Meta-side caches outside GIPHY's control. Ownership sits with Shutterstock, but the contracting entity in the current Terms is still Giphy, Inc., 350 Fifth Ave, FL 20, New York, NY 10118 — the address for written notices such as arbitration opt-outs. The privacy policy body reads 'Last Updated: June 11, 2024'; Giphy is certified under the EU-U.S., UK Extension and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks.
Download your data from GIPHY first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1There is no self-service data download in GIPHY's settings — the policy only offers access by logging into your account
- 2Email [email protected] from the address registered to your account
- 3State that you are exercising your right of access and requesting a copy of the personal data GIPHY holds about you, in a machine-readable format (data portability) if you are in the EU/UK
- 4Cite the GDPR (EU, UK, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland) or your US state privacy law — the policy names California CCPA/CPRA, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia
- 5Include your GIPHY username and channel URL so they can locate the account
- 6Expect an identity-verification step — GIPHY says it 'may need to collect additional Personal Data to verify your identity, such as a government-issued ID'
- 7EU users may also contact the designated EU representative, DP-Dock GmbH, Ballindamm 39, 20095 Hamburg, at [email protected]; UK users can contact DP Data Protection Services UK Ltd., 16 Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, London WC2B 5AH
- 8Complete this before deleting the account, since deletion removes your access immediately and is irreversible
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1GIPHY has no deactivation or account-suspension state — the only account-level action is permanent deletion. The official support article recommends an alternative: 'You might instead consider adjusting your privacy settings on your channel and content.' That privacy setting is applied per item, not account-wide: set content to Public or Private during the upload flow, or later by opening a GIF's edit console on desktop (hover the GIF on your channel page, click the edit pencil). GIPHY states 'Private content cannot be seen by anyone but you when you are logged in, and they can't be shared.' To change many items at once, use the Bulk Editor (click the Avatar icon at the top right to reach your channel page, then 'Bulk Editor' above your content) — it supports bulk edits to content privacy settings, but is 'only available to upgraded channels accessing giphy.com on desktop'. Separately, upgraded Brand and Creator channels can hide view counts by visiting account Settings and toggling 'Display GIF View Counts' to 'Private'.
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.

GIPHY deletion FAQs
Can I get my GIPHY account back after deleting it?+
No. GIPHY's official support article is explicit: 'deletion is forever and we will not be able to recover your information if you decide to sign up again later.' There is no grace period, no reactivation window and no deactivation-instead-of-deletion option. The same article suggests an alternative if you only want to disappear rather than leave: 'You might instead consider adjusting your privacy settings on your channel and content.' Content set to Private 'cannot be seen by anyone but you when you are logged in, and they can't be shared.'
Will deleting my account remove the GIFs I uploaded?+
Not reliably. The privacy policy warns that 'any public activity on your Account prior to deletion will remain stored on our servers and may remain accessible to the public', and that GIPHY 'may retain and continue to use and disclose certain User Content (e.g., a GIF you provided that was subsequently shared by another user)'. Delete individual GIFs first — one at a time, using the edit pencil then 'Delete This GIF' on desktop, or the three vertical dots below the GIF then 'Delete' in the app — verify your channel page is empty, and only then delete the account. There is no bulk-delete tool; the Bulk Editor covers tags, source links, content URLs and privacy settings only, and is restricted to upgraded channels on desktop.
Why can't I delete a GIF from my phone's browser?+
GIPHY documents this directly: 'The option to delete a GIF does not currently exist on GIPHY's mobile website. Download the GIPHY app or sign in to your account using a desktop computer to complete this action.' Account deletion itself is documented for both desktop ('My Channel' > 'Settings' > 'Channel Privacy') and mobile (person icon > gear icon > 'Account Settings'), but if you want your uploads gone before the account goes, you need the app or a desktop computer.
How do I get a copy of my GIPHY data before I delete?+
GIPHY has no self-service data-export tool — the policy only says 'If you are a registered user, you can access Personal Data associated with your Account by logging into our Services.' For an actual copy you must email [email protected]: the policy grants EU, UK, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland users GDPR rights, and gives residents of California (CCPA/CPRA), Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia a 'Right to Access/Know: You may request more information about the Personal Data we collect, use, or disclose, and request a copy of such Personal Data by emailing us at [email protected].' GIPHY warns it 'may need to collect additional Personal Data to verify your identity, such as a government-issued ID.' Do this before deleting, because deletion is irreversible and removes your access immediately.
My GIFs still show up in Slack, Discord and Google after I deleted my account. Why?+
GIPHY is a syndication platform: GIFs are served to partner apps through the GIPHY API and cached on CDNs, in message histories and in search-engine indexes. Deleting your account severs your access, not those downstream copies. GIPHY's Terms of Service grant it 'a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, fully paid, transferable, sublicensable right to use, modify, reproduce, distribute… and otherwise fully exploit such User Content', so deleting the account revokes nothing already in circulation. You would need to chase each third-party host separately.
Is there a way to force GIPHY to erase everything, not just close the account?+
You can file a formal erasure request, which is broader than account deletion. Email [email protected] asking GIPHY to erase the personal data it holds about you, citing GDPR (EU/UK) or your state's 'Right to Request Deletion' (California CCPA/CPRA, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Virginia — the five US laws the policy names). GIPHY notes that 'in some circumstances, we may not be able to fully comply with your request, such as if it is frivolous or extremely impractical, if it jeopardizes the rights of others, or if it is not required by law, but in those circumstances, we will still respond to notify you of such a decision.' EU users can also contact GIPHY's designated EU representative, DP-Dock GmbH, Ballindamm 39, 20095 Hamburg, at [email protected]; the UK representative is DP Data Protection Services UK Ltd., 16 Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, London WC2B 5AH (contact via [email protected]).
What if the 'Delete Your Account' button doesn't work?+
The support article ends with 'Having any trouble? Contact support and we will help you out!' and the privacy policy repeats it: 'If you have trouble deleting your Account, please reach out to us at [email protected].' Submit a ticket at https://support.giphy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or email from the address on the account, state clearly that you want the account permanently deleted, and include your GIPHY username and channel URL. The Terms of Service confirm 'You can delete your account at any time, either directly or through a request to us', so an email request is a documented, valid route.
