How to delete your VK account
VK (formerly VKontakte) is the largest social network in Russia and the Russian-speaking internet. A VK profile accumulates a deep record: your registration identity (real name, date of birth, gender, phone number, email), your private message history, photo and video albums, saved music, your full friends and communities graph, and every wall post, comment and like you have left. Since VK folded everything into a single VK ID login, that one account also carries your identity into Odnoklassniki (OK), VK Music, VK Video and every third-party site where you clicked "Log in with VK ID" — VK's own help centre warns that deleting the VK ID takes all of them with it.
Delete your VK account, step by step
- 1Open vk.ru in a desktop browser and sign in. VK's account and help pages now live on the vk.ru / id.vk.ru domains
- 2Before deleting, cancel any paid subscriptions (VK Music, VK Combo, VK Video subscriptions, community donations). VK's help centre states explicitly that account deletion does NOT cancel active subscriptions — turn off auto-renewal under "Платежи и подписки" ("Payments and subscriptions") in your VK ID account first
- 3Optional but recommended: request your data archive first at vk.ru/data_protection, in the "Выгрузить данные о себе" ("Download your data") section. Do this before deleting — you lose access to the tool once the account is gone
- 4Go to your VK ID personal cabinet at id.vk.ru/account (or click your profile photo in the top-right corner and choose "Управление аккаунтом VK ID" / "Manage VK ID account")
- 5In the left-hand menu, open "Мои данные" ("My data")
- 6Scroll to the bottom of that page to "Действия с аккаунтом" ("Account actions") and click "Удаление аккаунта VK ID" ("Delete VK ID account")
- 7In the pop-up, optionally pick a reason for leaving, then click "Удалить аккаунт" ("Delete account") to confirm
- 8In the mobile app the flow is the same: open the app menu, go into your VK ID settings, open "Мои данные" ("My data"), scroll to "Действия с аккаунтом" ("Account actions") and tap "Удаление аккаунта VK ID", then confirm. Opening id.vk.ru/account in any browser also works
- 9Your page immediately displays as deleted. It is then held for 210 days (7 months). Do not sign back in and choose the restore option during that window — after 210 days the account, its linked phone number(s) and email address(es), and your profiles in connected services are erased permanently
What actually happens when you delete
Gets removed
- ✓Your public profile page — wall posts, status, photo and video albums, stories, gifts and bookmarks stop being viewable by anyone the moment you confirm
- ✓The VK ID account itself after 210 days, including the linked phone number(s) and email address(es), which are released
- ✓Your login to every service tied to that VK ID: VKontakte, VK Music, OK (Odnoklassniki) and any third-party site where you used "Log in with VK ID" — VK states you would have to register again to use those services
- ✓Your profiles in VK ID-connected services, which are permanently removed once the 210 days elapse
- ✓Your friends list, community subscriptions and follower relationships as displayed from your side
- ✓Your copy of your private message threads, which disappear from your interface immediately
Stays behind
- ✗Your profile URL stays live for the entire 210 days as a "Страница удалена" ("Page deleted") stub — and anyone holding your password can bring the account back in full during that window
- ✗Messages you sent remain in your recipients' chats. Deleting your account removes your profile, not the copies sitting in other people's conversations; you simply show as a deleted page
- ✗Comments, replies, likes and reposts you left on other people's posts and in communities stay in place, attributed to the deleted profile
- ✗Content other users reposted, downloaded or screenshotted, plus search-engine caches and archive sites that indexed your page before deletion
- ✗Message content and communications metadata VK must retain as a registered "organizer of information dissemination" under Russian law (the Yarovaya package) — broadly six months of content and a year of metadata, disclosable to Russian authorities on request. Account deletion does not override this
- ✗Payment and transaction records tied to VK Pay and paid subscriptions, retained for accounting and tax purposes
Before you delete
Core flow verified word-for-word against VK's official help articles (id.vk.ru/about/faq/users/delete/18017 and account_problem/18027). Gotchas in order of damage. (1) Deletion does NOT cancel paid subscriptions — VK says so explicitly — so cancel VK Music / VK Combo / community donations first or you will keep being billed with no account to cancel from. (2) You are deleting a VK ID, not just a VKontakte page: OK (Odnoklassniki), VK Music and every third-party site you signed into with VK ID go with it, and VK states you must register again to use those services. (3) The 210-day (7-month) hold is fixed; VK documents no way to shorten it. (4) During that window anyone with your password can fully restore the account — change the password to something random before deleting if that matters. (5) Request your data archive at vk.ru/data_protection BEFORE deleting; the tool is unreachable afterwards. (VK's public archive page blocks automated inspection, so the exact request limits, link lifetime and excluded file types could not be verified — check them on the page itself.) (6) VK's account and help pages are served from vk.ru / id.vk.ru; do this from a desktop browser. (7) The interface is Russian-first and help articles are effectively Russian-only. (8) An account you have lost access to can only be permanently BLOCKED (via the report → "Старый профиль: заблокировать" flow, with a selfie and ID document), and that decision is irreversible. (9) Russian ORI/Yarovaya obligations require VK to retain message content and metadata regardless of your deletion request, and there is no functioning GDPR erasure channel for VK today.
Download your data from VK first
Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.
- 1Sign in at vk.ru and go to vk.ru/data_protection (also reachable from the left menu: "Ещё" / "More" → "Защита данных" / "Data protection")
- 2Find the "Выгрузить данные о себе" ("Download your data") section — the direct link scrolls you straight to it
- 3Click "Запросить архив" ("Request archive")
- 4Choose which categories of data to include and confirm the request
- 5VK builds the archive in the background and notifies you when it is ready; this can take from a few hours to longer depending on how much data you have
- 6Download the ZIP promptly — the download link and how often you may request a new archive are both limited, and the exact limits are shown on the page when you submit
- 7Note: request the archive BEFORE you start the deletion. Once the account is deleted you can no longer reach the export tool. Check the categories listed on the page itself to confirm what is and is not included in your archive.
Want to take a break instead? Deactivate
Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.
- 1VK has no separate "deactivate" option — deletion itself functions as a 210-day deactivation. When you confirm deletion, the profile is hidden from everyone and shows "Страница удалена" ("Page deleted"), while your data is preserved for 7 months. To reactivate at any point in that window, go to the VK login page, enter your usual credentials and choose the restore option; the account comes back with posts, photos, friends and messages unchanged. If you simply want to disappear without deleting, the alternative is to lock the profile down under "Настройки" → "Приватность" ("Settings" → "Privacy") and set the audience fields to "Только я" ("Only me").
If deletion fails — or you live in the EU, UK, or California
You have a legal right to request erasure of your personal data under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California). Use these official channels if the self-service flow doesn't work.
VK deletion FAQs
Can I delete my VK account immediately instead of waiting 210 days?+
No. VK's help centre documents a fixed 7-month (210-day) holding period and no way to shorten it — there is no "delete now" toggle. The only thing that is immediate is invisibility: your page stops being viewable by other users the moment you confirm and shows as "Page deleted". Permanent erasure happens automatically once the 210 days elapse.
Will VK stop charging me for VK Music or VK Combo after I delete my account?+
No — this is the most expensive mistake people make here. VK's deletion help article states outright that deleting the account does not cancel active subscriptions and that you must turn them off beforehand. Cancel auto-renewal under "Платежи и подписки" ("Payments and subscriptions") in your VK ID account before you delete. Once the account is gone you no longer have an interface to cancel from, and you may need to block the charge at your bank or card issuer instead.
Why did deleting VK also lock me out of Odnoklassniki and VK Music?+
Because you are not deleting a VKontakte profile — you are deleting the VK ID that sits underneath it. VK's own help article warns that deleting your VK ID account removes your VKontakte profile and that you lose access to profiles in connected services such as VK Music and OK, and that you would have to register again to use them. Any third-party website where you signed up via "Log in with VK ID" also becomes unreachable.
Can I change my mind after deleting, and how?+
Yes, for 210 days. VK's restore article says to go to the login page, enter the same credentials, and choose the restore option; everything comes back — posts, photos, friends, messages — because nothing is actually erased until the window closes. If more than 7 months (210 days) have passed since deletion, VK states that recovery is not possible and you would have to register a brand-new account.
I deleted my VK page — why do my comments and likes still show up everywhere?+
Deleting your account removes your profile, not the traces you left on other people's property. Comments you posted on friends' walls and in communities, your likes and your reposts stay where they are, now attributed to a deleted profile. If you want those gone, delete them manually from each post before you start the deletion — once the account is gone you have no way to reach them.
How do I get rid of an old VK page when I've lost the password and the phone number?+
You cannot delete it yourself, but VK can permanently block it. Open the page, click "Ещё" ("More") → "Пожаловаться" ("Report"), choose "Проблема с профилем" ("Problem with profile") → "Старый профиль: заблокировать" ("Old profile: block") → "Это мой аккаунт" ("This is my account"); VK's help article also links a direct form. You supply a reachable phone number for SMS status updates, a photo proving identity (a selfie holding the on-screen gesture VK shows you, or a photo taken beside your screen with the form visible) and a photo of an ID document — passport, driver's licence or birth certificate. VK typically decides within several hours. Approval is irreversible: the account is blocked permanently and cannot be restored.
Does VK actually delete my private messages?+
Not in the way most people assume. Your copy disappears from your interface at once, but everyone you messaged keeps their side of the conversation. Separately, VK is on Russia's register of "organizers of information dissemination", which obliges it to store message content and communications metadata for a set period and hand it to state authorities on request — a legal retention that your deletion request does not override.
