How to delete your Threads account

Threads is Meta's text-based social network, built directly on top of Instagram — you cannot have a Threads profile without an Instagram account, and your Threads handle, profile photo and verification status are inherited from it. It holds every post, reply, repost and quote you have written, your likes and saved posts, your Threads-specific follower and following graph, your mutes, blocks and hidden-word lists, plus the interaction and device signals Meta uses to rank your feed and target ads across its apps. If you ever turned on fediverse sharing, copies of your public posts and your username and profile picture were also pushed to independent Mastodon-style servers outside Meta's control. Threads profiles can now be deleted on their own without touching your Instagram account — Meta's help article states plainly that 'Deleting your Threads account won't also delete your Instagram or Facebook account.'

Delete your Threads account, step by step

  1. 1Open the Threads app on iPhone or Android. Unlike deactivation and data export, deletion IS also available from a computer — Meta's help article lists Computer alongside the app and mobile browser
  2. 2Tap 'Profile' or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile
  3. 3Tap 'Menu' (the two-line icon) in the top right
  4. 4Tap 'Accounts Center', then tap 'Personal details'
  5. 5Tap 'Account ownership and control', then tap 'Deactivation or deletion'
  6. 6Select the Threads profile you want to delete (not your Instagram or Facebook account — check the icon and handle carefully)
  7. 7Tap 'Delete account', then tap 'Continue'
  8. 8Select a reason for deleting your account, then tap 'Continue'
  9. 9Enter your password if prompted and confirm to submit the request
  10. 10If your app does not show 'Accounts Center' (Meta notes 'Threads in Accounts Center isn't available everywhere'), use the older path instead: 'Menu' > 'Account settings' > 'Personal details' > 'Deactivation or deletion' > 'Delete profile' at the bottom, then follow the prompts. Some app builds label this 'Menu' > 'Account' > 'Deactivate or delete profile'

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • ✗Copies of your content in Meta backup storage after the 90-day deletion window, kept for disaster and data-loss recovery
  • ✗Information Meta retains to comply with legal obligations, enforce its terms, or prevent harm, including records behind a ban
  • ✗Copies of your public posts already federated to Mastodon and other independent servers — Meta's article says it 'cannot guarantee that they will delete your information, and it may remain publicly visible despite your decision to delete your Threads account'
  • ✗Other people's replies, quotes, reposts and screenshots that reference or reproduce your posts
  • ✗Cached and indexed copies of public threads.com pages in Google and other search engines until they re-crawl
  • ✗Meta's advertising and measurement records tied to your Instagram account, since Threads has no separate ad identity

Before you delete

The single biggest trap: the deletion screen lives inside Meta's shared Accounts Center, which lists your Instagram, Facebook and Threads profiles side by side. At step 6 it is very easy to select the Instagram account instead of the Threads profile and nuke everything. Read the handle and icon on the selection screen before tapping 'Delete account'. The relationship is one-way: deleting Threads does not delete Instagram, but deleting the Instagram account you signed up with does delete Threads. Watch the platform asymmetry — deletion works on the app, mobile browser AND a computer, but Meta's help articles state that deactivation and data export are 'not available on computers'. Export before you delete, and budget for it: Meta officially warns the export link email can take up to 30 days, which can exceed the 30-day deletion window if you leave it to the last minute. Timing overall: 30 days to permanence, up to 90 days for removal across Meta's systems, backup copies may persist beyond that, then a 90-day lockout before you can sign up again on that Instagram account. All Threads help documentation is hosted inside the Instagram Help Center (facebook.com/help/instagram/...), so support paths run through Instagram.

Download your data from Threads first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Open the Threads or Instagram app on your phone — Meta states this feature 'isn't available on computers' (Android app, iPhone app or mobile browser only)
  2. 2Go to 'Menu' > 'Accounts Center'
  3. 3Tap 'Your information and permissions'
  4. 4Tap 'Export your information', then tap 'Create export'
  5. 5Select your Threads profile when prompted to choose which account to export
  6. 6Choose 'Export to device' to download a ZIP, or export to an external service such as Google Drive or Dropbox
  7. 7If the options are offered, set the date range to 'All time', pick HTML (readable) or JSON (machine-readable), and choose the highest available media quality
  8. 8Tap 'Start export' and enter your password if prompted
  9. 9Wait for Meta's email with the download link. Meta warns 'It may take up to 30 days for us to email you when a link is ready' — it is frequently much faster, but do not gamble the 30-day deletion window on that. Download the file before you submit the deletion request.

  8. 8While deactivated, your content and your interactions with other people's content are not visible on Threads. To reactivate, log back in with the same Instagram credentials. Deactivating Threads does not delete your Threads data or affect your Instagram account.

Will deleting Threads also delete my Instagram account?+

No. Meta's help article 'Delete your Threads account' states explicitly that deleting your Threads account won't also delete your Instagram or Facebook account. The reverse is not true, though: the Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy says 'Your Threads profile may be deleted at any time by deleting the account that you used to sign up with Threads' — so deleting Instagram takes Threads with it.

I changed my mind — can I cancel the deletion?+

Yes, for 30 days. Meta's wording: your profile, content, likes and followers will be permanently deleted 30 days after your request is submitted, and you can cancel the request before the 30-day deadline by logging back into your Threads profile and then tapping 'Log in' to confirm the cancellation. After the 30 days it is irreversible.

Why can't I sign up for Threads again with my Instagram account?+

There is a mandatory 90-day cooldown. Meta's help article states: 'After your Threads account is deleted, you will have to wait 90 days before you can sign up again with the same Instagram account.' If your Threads or Instagram account was removed for violating Meta's Community Standards rather than deleted by you, signing up again with that account may not be possible at all.

Should I deactivate instead of deleting?+

Deactivation is the safer option if you are unsure. Meta says deactivating hides your Threads profile and that 'your content and interactions with others' content won't be visible on Threads until you reactivate it' — nothing is destroyed, no 30-day clock runs, and there is no 90-day cooldown afterwards. Two official limits to know: you can only deactivate once a week, and deactivation isn't available on computers. Deactivating Threads does not affect your Instagram account.

How do I save my Threads posts before I delete?+

Export first — you cannot retrieve anything afterwards. In the Threads or Instagram app go to 'Accounts Center' > 'Your information and permissions' > 'Export your information' > 'Create export', pick your Threads profile, and choose to export to your device or to a service like Google Drive or Dropbox. Critically, Meta's help article warns 'It may take up to 30 days for us to email you when a link is ready' — in practice it is often far faster, but you must not assume it will beat a 30-day deletion clock. Request and download the export BEFORE you submit the deletion request. Export is not available on computers.

What happens to my posts that were shared to the fediverse?+

If you had fediverse sharing turned on, copies of your public posts, username and profile picture were sent to independent Mastodon-compatible servers. Meta's article says it will turn off fediverse sharing and 'request that other servers on the fediverse delete your Threads account and content from their servers', but adds 'We cannot guarantee that they will delete your information.' The Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy is blunter: 'Information sent to Third Party Services is no longer in Meta's control and is subject to the terms and policies of those Third Party Services.' Servers that ignore the request keep your posts indefinitely.

Is my Threads data really gone after 30 days?+

Mostly. The 30-day mark is when your profile, content, likes and followers are permanently deleted and stop being recoverable. Meta's Privacy Policy adds that it deletes information within 90 days of a deletion request, that copies may remain in backup storage used for disaster recovery beyond that, and that it keeps information longer where needed to meet legal obligations, enforce its terms, or prevent harm.
