How to delete your Apple ID account

Developer & TechOwned by Apple Inc.Self-service onlineDifficulty: DifficultTime: 7 daysVerified June 2026

Your Apple ID is the master identity for iCloud, the App Store, iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Pay, and every Apple device you've ever signed into. Apple stores your name, payment methods, purchase history (every app and song you ever bought), iCloud documents and photos, iMessage history, Health data, Find My device list, and Activation Lock relationships. Deleting an Apple ID is high-stakes and irreversible.

Delete your Apple ID account, step by step

  1. 1Go to privacy.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID
  2. 2Click 'Request to delete your account' under 'Manage Your Data'
  3. 3Read every warning carefully — this is destructive across every Apple service
  4. 4Pick a reason and click 'Continue'
  5. 5Confirm the contact methods Apple should use to follow up
  6. 6Get and write down the unique access code Apple shows you (you'll need it to cancel)
  7. 7Apple processes the request over up to 7 days, then permanently deletes your account

What actually happens when you delete

Gets removed

  • Your Apple ID email and entire iCloud account (mail, contacts, calendars, drive, photos)
  • All purchased apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books
  • iMessage, FaceTime, and shared albums you created
  • Saved payment methods, Apple Pay cards, and Apple Cash balance
  • Health, Fitness, Activity history, and HomeKit configuration

Stays behind

  • Apps you bought stay installed on existing devices but cannot be re-downloaded or updated
  • Photos and files synced to other devices remain locally on those devices
  • iMessages already delivered to other people's devices stay in their conversation history
  • Records Apple retains for tax, anti-fraud, and legal compliance
  • AppleCare contracts may continue but support requires a new Apple ID for service

Before you delete

Deleting an Apple ID is one of the most destructive deletions on the internet — you lose ALL purchased apps, music, movies, books, iCloud data, and you also remove Activation Lock from any iPhones/iPads/Macs you own (those devices become unlockable by anyone if lost). Disable Find My and sign out of every device FIRST. Cancel Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud+, AppleCare, and any auto-renewing subscriptions. iMessage will be deactivated — request iMessage deregistration if you're moving the linked phone number to Android.

Download your data from Apple ID first

Most platforms only honor a data-export request while the account is still active. Do this before you delete.

  1. 1Sign in to privacy.apple.com
  2. 2Under 'Get a copy of your data', click 'Request a copy of your data'
  3. 3Pick the categories (Apple ID account info, App Store, iCloud Drive, iCloud Photos, Health, etc.)
  4. 4Choose max file size for the archive
  5. 5Apple emails a download link within 7 days; link is valid for 14 days

Want to take a break instead? Deactivate

Deactivation hides your profile without permanently destroying it. Logging back in restores everything.

  1. 1From privacy.apple.com, choose 'Request to deactivate your account'
  2. 2Pick a reason and confirm
  3. 3Apple suspends the account; you can reactivate within roughly 30 days by contacting Apple Support with your access code
  4. 4After that window, deactivation becomes permanent deletion

Apple ID deletion FAQs

Will my iPhone still work if I delete my Apple ID?+

Yes — the device hardware works fine — but you can't use any Apple service tied to that ID: no App Store updates, no iCloud, no iMessage, no Apple Pay, no Find My. Sign out and sign in with a different Apple ID before deletion, or factory-reset and set up as new.

I'm worried about Activation Lock — what should I do?+

Before deleting, go to every iPhone/iPad/Mac/Apple Watch signed into your Apple ID and sign out (Settings > [your name] > Sign Out, requires your Apple ID password). Or factory reset each device. If you skip this and delete your Apple ID, Activation Lock is removed from those devices — they can be wiped and re-paired by anyone who has them.

What happens to my iMessages and phone number after deletion?+

iMessage tied to your Apple ID is deactivated. If your phone number is registered to iMessage and you switch to Android, you may miss messages until you deregister the number. Apple has a deregistration tool at selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage.

Can I get my purchased apps and music back if I change my mind?+

Within the 7-day processing window, you can contact Apple Support with the access code Apple gave you and cancel the deletion. After deletion completes, all purchases are forfeited and there is no recovery — even buying the same apps with a new Apple ID counts as new purchases.

Will my Apple Cash and Apple Pay cards be removed?+

Yes. Transfer Apple Cash balance to your bank BEFORE you delete (Wallet > Apple Cash > Transfer to Bank). Apple Pay credit/debit cards are unenrolled. The physical Apple Card account (if you have one) is with Goldman Sachs and is closed separately — contact Apple Card support.

Does deleting my Apple ID delete my data on Apple's servers?+

Apple deletes most personal iCloud content within the deletion window. Some operational data (purchase history needed for tax records, anti-fraud logs, customer-service records) is retained for as long as legally required, but it's no longer linked to an active identity.
